Theresa Bishop November 17 1931 September 22 2022

Obituary
Passed peacefully away while surrounded by her loving family, at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital, St. John’s, on Thursday, September 22, 2022, Theresa Bishop (nee Dobbin), of St. Mary’s, S.M.B. aged 90 years.
Leaving to mourn with treasured and loving memories are sons Carl (Rhonda), Derrick, with whom she resided and provided her with loving care, and daughter Lori (Danny) and daughter-in-law Rose Anna Colbourne. She leaves also 4 grandchildren: Maria (Spencer), Jack (Nicolette), Jennifer (Dillon) and Johnny Colbourne, brother-in-law Lawrence “Lar” Doody, as well as a large circle of extended family and dear friends, including Mary Bishop, Barbara Breen, Betty Kielly and Marg St. Croix.
Theresa is predeceased by her husband Alphonsus “Phonse” Bishop, son Michael; parents Stanley & Molly Dobbin and Mary Daley (Jim), parents-in-law Alphonsus & Ellen Bishop, brothers Allan and Clifford Dobbin (Josephine); sisters Mary Singleton (Vince) and Marion Doody (Sept. 5/22) and a number of other fondly remembered relatives and friends.
Theresa was born in Regina of Colinet Island but grew up close by in St. Mary’s. Having lost her mother at a young age, Mom had to grow up fast. She loved school but had to quit before graduating to earn a living. She was a hard worker all her life, working several jobs in St. John’s before meeting her husband from Point La Haye and marrying him in June of 1964. They were soon off to Wabush where Phonse went to work in the Labrador mines while she took care of their four children. Life was not always easy for her, especially after losing her husband to heart disease when he was just 49 years old, but she met every challenge life threw her way head on. She went on to raise her four children, intent on doing it on her own. Her determination to do so, to push them to go further than what she was able to herself, was always her number one priority.
Theresa loved traditional music and reading non-fiction. She devoured true stories about fellow Newfoundland and Labradorians. She also loved drop in visits from her life-long cherished friends and from her kind and doting neighbours. She greeted everyone with a smile, eager to sit and chat over a cup of tea. Each will remember her for her comical sense of humour, her wry observations about life and her incredibly sharp wit. Although she had mobility challenges later in life, she took great pleasure in the simple things – a feed of Jiggs dinner, visits from her grandchildren and her special 4-legged friend, Chloe.
A special thanks to the staff of 6 West – St. Clare’s, 6 for their care of Mom during the past month, to the staff of Best of Care Ltd for their dedication and companionship to Mom over for the last number of years and to Dr. Thomas McGarry, Todd & Staff, including Blayne, of St. Mary’s Pharmacy and Gibbons’ Ambulance Service for their care and support of the years.
