Tadeusz (Tadzio) Hubert

“Why do they call it badminton if it’s a good game? It should be called goodminton.”
This is an original joke that Tadeusz’s family still quotes to this day. Tadeusz Hubert passed away peacefully on Monday, January 31, 2022 at Bridgepoint Health Centre, Toronto at the age of 76. His spirit for life and laughter will carry on with his wife of 52 years, Wisia and their two children Tomek (Shantel) Hubert and Anna Hubert. He was a proud dziadek (grandpa) to Uma Hubert. He will be missed by his sister Maria Hubert, his sister-in-law Anna Skalska and her husband Sidney Fireman. Tadeusz was a loving uncle to Zuzanna and Greg Chociej. Pre-deceased by his brother Antoni Hubert, his sister-in-law Malgosia Chociej, and her husband Jacek Chociej.
Tadzio was born in Lwow, Poland in 1945 to Marian and Jadwiga Hubert, who moved their family to Krakow the following year as Poland’s eastern border shifted westward after World War 2. He was the second of three children; always a supportive sibling to his younger brother Antoni and older sister Maria.
He was an astute scholar and an accomplished competitive swimmer, who swam while studying law at Jagiellonian University. He achieved his legal license in 1975 and practiced as a lawyer for the rest of his time in Poland.
When not working a courtroom or spending time with his kochana (beloved), he adored playing bridge, sailing, and performing short skits and poetry for anyone lucky enough to hear them.
Tadzio and Wisia made the brave decision to come to Canada via Denmark in 1985 to give their children more opportunities for a brighter future. Anna and Sid were instrumental in this decision and were tirelessly helpful in assisting this young family as they moved their lives across an ocean.
Tadzio, Wisia and their kids adjusted splendidly to life in Canada, where they quickly created a close community of friends, whom Tadzio would welcome with his effortless and gentle smile. Tadzio was always the life of the party and the resident poet to their large tight-knit group of friends. It wasn’t a proper get-together until Tadzio stood up and read one of his storied poems. Tadzio’s ability to twist the polish language into intriguing and clever forms was unrivaled and a celebrated highlight of every big get-together. Getting a poem from Tadzio was considered a significant honour and his prose was always met with romantic exuberance.
Even in his last moments when he struggled with language as a result of his brain tumour he could still whimsically recite lines from his beloved poems.
We will miss his ‘dad’ jokes, his dark sense of humour, his love for passionate political debate, and his philosophical nature.
He braved his recent diagnosis with calm as he fought through radiation and coping with what was taken away from him – his language.
Tadzio may not have lived the life that he thought he’d wanted to live, but perhaps it was closer to perfection than he’d thought. He was a devoted husband, proud father, respected uncle, beloved grandfather, and adored friend.
Na Zdrowie, Tadzio.
