Obituary
Stanley Firman
It is with heavy hearts that we announce, after a brief illness, the passing of Stanley (Stashu/Stash) Firman, peacefully on December 8, 2022 at Gimli Community Health Centre at the age of 88 years. Dad was surrounded by family at the time of his passing and we are all forever grateful for the quality life he lived and provided to all of us. Dad has now reunited with his father Paul, mother Florence, brothers Art, Paul, and Archie, as well as his father and mother-in-law, Victor and Anne Urbanski.
Left to cherish in Dad’s memory are his wife Shirley (married 57 years), son Ron (Angie) Firman of Dauphin, daughters Sharon Firman (Bob) of Gimli and Tracy Firman (Ray) of Stonewall. Also left mourn are his grandchildren, Curtis (Courtney) Firman, Joel Firman, Hunter Lupyrypa (Ryan), Brooke Lupyrypa, Mike (Leanne) Aitken, Tim Aitken (Aaryn), sister Marge Stewart, sisters-in-law Anne and Lil Firman, brother-in-law Len (Ollie) Urban, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Dad was born in Winnipeg and was the youngest of five children. He worked on the family farm in Husavik from a young age with his brothers and sister. Dad’s father Paul and his brothers did custom thrashing for local area farmers, operating a sawmill as well. Dad met our Mom Shirley in 1963 and they married August 14, 1965. When Dad’s parents moved to Gimli, they took over the family homestead on Willow Creek Road where they continued to farm. Dad worked at the RCAF in Gimli from 1956 until the air force base closed in 1971. During this time, he worked in the CE section, then transferred to ME. When the base closed in 1971, Dad continued to cattle and grain farm, as well as drive school bus for the Evergreen School Division. He later sold off the cattle and continued to grain farm and drive bus, until his retirement in June 1999. Dad and Mom sold the family farm and moved to Siglavik in 2007.
Dad and Mom spent many of their years working on the family farm, as well as raising three children. Dad enjoyed all types of outdoor activities including hunting, fishing, camping, trapping, and going to the cabin at Beaver Creek. Dad may have retired, but he certainly never slowed down. Up until last year, Dad was still going out to check his traps on snowshoes, as well as worked with Natural Resources looking after nuisance beavers. Dad made friends everywhere he went chatting with all from young to old. There was no one he couldn’t hold a conversation with and he enjoyed a good laugh with all. Although a hunter, a trapper and a fisherman, Dad had a love for all nature, helping any animal in need and making many critter friends along the way.
Dad’s life was devoted to his family and he cherished all visits and get togethers with his children and grandchildren. In our younger years, much time was spent playing around the family farm, visiting to the fields, and packing into the Suburban for the next camping adventure. Later, Dad enjoyed all his grandchildren and loved to watch his family grow, hearing what they were all up to and packing us all into the family home for every holiday celebration.
We would sincerely like to thank the wonderful staff at Selkirk Regional Health Centre for Dad’s initial diagnosis and care, as well as Dr. Fulmore and the staff at Gimli Community Health Centre for the compassion shown to Dad and our family during his final month.
Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, December 17th at 11:00 a.m. at the St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church, Gimli, MB. with Fr. Stan Gacek officiating. Interment will take place at St. Michael’s Cemetery, North Foley, MB.
In lieu of flowers, donation can be made to St. Michael’s Cemetery in care of Linda Zazulinski, Box 1292, Gimli, MB, R0C 1B0.
Stanley,
How do I sum up 59 years since we first met. You carried me through the most difficult years of my life. You gave me a reason to not give up. Through good and bad, we did it side by side. You taught me to enjoy life and appreciate small pleasures. I will forever miss you and your silly remarks, but I have beautiful memories and our wonderful family to carry me through.
Rest peacefully Sweetie. Love and miss you forever, Shirley.
