STRAUS, Sister Mildred (formerly S.Lucitta) School Sister of Notre Dame
Died at Notre Dame Convent, Waterdown, Ontario on April 6, 2022 at the age of 93 and in her 76th year as a School Sister of Notre Dame. Predeceased by her parents, Michael and Mary (Ditner) Straus, also, her brothers Ralph, Jake, Gerhard and Eugene and her sisters, Sister Michaeline SSND, Sister Caroline CSJ and Adeline Haber. Fondly remembered by the members of her religious community, her sisters, Sister Christina Straus, CSJ, Sister Lucy Straus, CSJ, and Lucille Delisle. Sister Mildred taught at the following schools: St. Mary’s and St Patrick’s, Cambridge, St. Mary’s, Owen Sound, St. Louis, Waterloo, Holy Family and St. Eugene’s Hamilton, Immaculate Conception, Chepstow. She was principal at St. Anthony’s (Bridgeport) Waterloo.
In 1961 Sister Mildred was one of four Canadian School Sisters of Notre Dame to open the mission in La Paz, Bolivia where for nine years she was teacher and administrator. Back in Ontario she studied at McMaster University, Hamilton before moving to Saskatoon where she was pastoral associate at St. Philip’s Parish. In 1975 she returned to South America for a year as pastoral assistant in Comas, Lima, Peru. The next year she attended the Divine Word program in London. In 1969 she taught at St. Charles School, Saskatoon and later became pastoral associate in the local parish. On her return to Ontario Sister Mildred was involved in the catechetical program for the Diocese of Hamilton. She was coordinator of the correspondence program and a member of the resource team coordinating the Parish Family Religion program. In 1995 she went to Wolseley, Saskatchewan where she directed the religious education program in five neighbouring parishes.
Indeed, Sister Mildred had a pioneer spirit, readily accepting new challenges in Latin America and in her home country. She was an effective educator enabling those with whom she worked. All her tasks were marked with precision and thoroughness.
Visitors will be received at Notre Dame Convent, Waterdown on Monday, April 11 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. A Prayer Service will be held on Monday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Tuesday, April 12 at 10:30 a.m. Interment in at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
