Siegfried Hertel 2022

In loving memory of Siegfried Hertel, 89 years, who passed away peacefully on Thursday morning, March 3rd, 2022 at Maison McCulloch Hospice. Predeceased by his wife Regina in 2013, father to Monica Phillips (David) and son Thomas. Doting grandfather to Luna. Affectionately known to his friends (of whom there were many) as Siggy. Siggy came to Canada from Germany in 1960 to escape the annexation of Berlin into East and West. He fled with only a suitcase leaving home and family behind “The Wall” for a chance at a life free from oppression. He came to Canada with a knowledge of bricklaying and surveying and within a year of arriving, had been hired by the City, and later the Region, of Sudbury. Siggy would devote 35 years to bringing clean water to the citizens of the region as the supervisor of the water treatment plant in Wahnapitae. When he wasn’t working, he was a gardener and along with Reggie, his wife of 52 years, he spent his retirement tending his garden and her flower beds at the home they built in Long Lake until moving into The Walford retirement home in 2015. A heartfelt thank you goes out to the staff at the Walford, to the Bayshore PSWs that provided care and support, to the exceptional doctors and nurses at the Northern Ontario Cancer Care Centre and to the staff and volunteers at Maison McCulloch hospice for their exemplary compassion and care. As per Siggy’s wishes and in light of the continuing COVID situation there will be no visitation or memorial service. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be greatly appreciated.

Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Siegfried Hertel 2022..
