McComb, Shirley Annabelle (Usher)… passed away peacefully at Belleville General Hospital after a blessedly brief struggle with Covid on September 16, 2022 at the age of 86. Beloved wife of the late Marvin McComb. Loving mother of Bob McComb (Marion) and Dale McComb (Trish). Adored grandmother of Matt & Shannon McComb, Olivia & Sommer Abernaithe and Jared McComb. Cherished great-grandmother of Evan and Alyssa. Predeceased by her brother Bill Usher.
Shirley had a great love of family and deep roots in the community. She was born on a mixed farm near Vernonville in the midst of the Depression. She grew up working with animals, driving tractors, selling produce door to door and peeling tomatoes in a canning factory. She started her teaching career at the age of 18 in Stone School, a one-room school near her home. After teacher’s college in Peterborough she moved on to other schools, both in Cramahe Township and also near Claremont where she lived with the Stickwood family. She rounded out her teaching career at Castleton Public School.
Shirley was a dedicated community member and a devoted advocate for agriculture. She was a long time member of the UCW at Morganston & later at St. Paul’s in Warkworth and a member of Castleton Women’s Institute and was active on the Church boards at Morganston & later at St. Paul’s, Warkworth. She tirelessly worked as part of the team at Morganston United Church that prepared and served meals for many years at Hoards Station. Twice Dairy Princess herself, she was coordinator for the Dairy Princess competition for Northumberland County for a number of years. She was an active participant in the Northumberland Federation of Agriculture, having served a term as President. Shirley, along with Marvin were founding members of the organizing committee and staunch supporters of the Rural Ramble, a county wide agricultural tour. She welcomed the public to their farm for tours and education and enjoyed sharing her experience with others. She was proud to help with NFA’s and Northumberland Agricultural Awareness Committee’s Field to Food events, a yearly educational activity intended to give school children a greater understanding of the food that they eat. Shirley’s contributions to agriculture were recognized when she and Marvin were inducted into the Quinte Agricultural Wall of Fame in 2019.
For fun, Shirley played baseball, the only sport that mattered and euchre, the only game that mattered. She was a competent pitcher well into adulthood and loved to play an evening game of toss and catch. She and Marvin loved to square dance and helped lead a group that taught other like minded individuals the difference between an alamand left and a right hand star. She and Marvin loved to go to The Station at Stockdale and open mic nights at Codrington, and while she didn’t play an instrument, she did often contribute an off-colour reading or two.
Over the last few years, Shirley struggled with a number of health problems. The family would like to thank Marvin and Shirley’s wonderful friends and neighbours for their visits and food deliveries. There are too many to mention – but you know who you are and that we are so very grateful for your kindness. Also many thanks to her doctors, nurses, technicians and PSW’s from whose care she has benefitted over the last few years, especially Dr. Emma Smith of the Cobourg Medical Centre, the staff at Quinte Health Care and the staff at Applefest Lodge.
The family will be having visitation at St. Paul’s United Church, 60 Main Street, Warkworth on Saturday, October 1, 2022 from 12:00 – 1:30 P.M. with funeral service to follow in the chapel at 1:30 P.M. Reception to immediately follow in the church Hall and private family interment thereafter at Castleton Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Farmtown Park in Stirling – Attention: Wall of Fame or St. Paul’s United Church in Warkworth cheques only would be appreciated. Memories, stories & condolences can be shared online at www.weaverfuneralhomes.com.
