It is with the greatest sorrow and regret that the family of Saorbhreathach (Shea) Oenghus McKay must announce his passing.
Shea was a good son, and was loved by all who knew him. Even strangers in his neighborhood described him to his family as a kind and gentle soul. In his secular life, he worked locally at Mark’s Work Wearhouse, and often expressed his happiness to work with his friends there.
Shea was, like many young men, an avid gamer, but also had a love for music and books, and was deeply introspective and thoughtful. In his brief life, he truly concerned himself with how to be a kind and caring person, and would actively look for ways to help others. He loved to spend time in nature, go camping with his mom, sisters and extended family, and to spend time with his best furry friend, Buddy. His gentle nature was an example to all of how people should treat one another. His family truly loved him and was proud of his exceptional heart.
Shea was born May 27th, 1999, and is survived by his parents Christopher McKay of Dieppe, NB, and Trina Benyi (Gerhardt) of Havelock, as well as his step father William Benyi of Havelock, NC, and his sisters Elizabeth Gerhardt of Halifax, NS, Kylia McKay of Woodstock, NB, and Ava Benyi of Havelock, NC, as well as his uncle Ian Gerhardt of Kingston, ON. and his aunt and uncle Susan Legacy (McKay) and Chris Legacy, of Woodstock, NB. He is also survived by his grandfathers Justus McKay of Woodstock, NB, and Frank Gerhardt or Kingston, ON., as well as extended family. He is predeceased by his grandmothers, Ivy McKay of Woodstock, NB, and Linda Gerhardt of Kingston, ON.
In accordance with the family’s wishes, there will be no public funeral service held, but there will be a celebration of life to be held for and by his friends and family at a later date, so that those who loved him can spend time to reflect on the happy times we had with him, in a positive light.
The family would like to thank, deeply and sincerely, all those who tried to help us locate Shea during the period of time he was missing, as well as all who offered their support and condolences through this difficult time. Not the least of these are the various members of the Woodstock Police Force, the local detachment of the RCMP, the EMO personnel, ground search and rescue teams and all the various private citizens who helped search for Shea, and showed deep compassion towards him, his family and his memory. We would also like to thank the unnamed individual who found Shea, so that he could be returned to his family, and offer them some closure.
For those who would like to commemorate Shea’s life, the family would ask that donations be made to the Canadian Mental Health Association in his memory. cmha.ca/how-you-can-help/donate/
