It is with shock and heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Samuel (Sam) Welcher on Tuesday, March 8, 2022 at the Health Science Centre at the age of 72. Sam was predeceased by his parents Jacob and Ella Welcher, his first wife Shirley, brothers Abe, Claude, and Eric and sisters Trixie and Laura.
Leaving to mourn with heavy hearts and in shock and disbelief are his precious wife of 31 years, Beulah, sons Brad (Robyn) and Brandon (Stephanie) and his pride and joy his precious grandson Fallon, as well as his fur baby Angel. He also leaves to mourn his mother in law Mary Froude, his brothers Ches, Saul and Ray and his sisters Suze and Debbie, as well as a large number of family and friends.
Sam was born in Badger’s Quay on March 20, 1949 and grew up in the community. He moved to St. John’s in 1974 to start his career with the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador where he spent 31 years working in the mail room of the Confederation Building. He retired from there in 2005 and went to work at various jobs in the private sector including driving taxi to Bonavista North and driving shuttle for Capital Hyundai and also driving school bus for disabled children. Sam was a hard worker who loved life and always wanted what was best for his family. He always looked for the next way to make an extra dollar to give those extras to his sons. He was always so proud of them and their accomplishments and never failed to take the opportunity to brag about them. He only had 9 months to brag about his precious grandson but he took every opportunity he got to make sure everybody knew that he had the most handsome and smartest grandson anywhere.
Anybody who knew Sam knew he was a devoted Toronto Maple Leafs fan and he loved to watch them play. In the last few years when his son Brandon would come by to watch the game with him was some of his most treasured moments. He loved to talk, to chat with people, friends or strangers – didn’t matter to him – and once you chatted with him he was your friend anyway. He loved to laugh and had a big hearty laugh. He absolutely loved music and when Brandon introduced him to YouTube he would sit down every night and listen to his country and western or Irish Newfoundland music. He was a staunch supporter of Newfoundland singers. Sam spent his last few years just relaxing and enjoying time with his family.
We want to express our heartfelt thanks to the doctors and nurses at the Emergency Department of HSC on March 8, 2022 and all they did for Sam to keep him comfortable. Your thoughtfulness and caring will never be forgotten.
As per his wishes, cremation has taken place, there will be no wake but a service will be held from the Carnell Memorial Chapel at 11:00 on Saturday, March 12, 2022 for family and friends. Due to Covid restrictions the numbers are slightly limited but if any of his friends would like to attend please contact somebody from the family and we will try to accommodate them. If somebody does want to attend please call Brandon at 689-6588 and he will let you know the numbers. The service will be livestreamed for anyone unable to attend.
