Sam Avery

AVERY, Sam (April 1, 1936 – May 26, 2022) – It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of a gentle soul. He leaves behind his wife Pat of 59 years, is son Bryan (Lucy) and his daughter Deborah (Dale). Grandfather of Sara, Geoffrey (Tati), Kristen, Stephanie and Blair. Survived by his sister Margaret Mathers, brother Ross (Joan) and special nephew Roger Mathers. Uncle to Michael, Jodie, Allison, Tracy & Jeffrey and Nicole & Corey. Predeceased by his parents William & Evelyn, his son Billie and his in-laws Walter & Ann Botuik who loved him like a son.
Through Sam’s struggle with dementia, he always had a smile for everyone. Sam was respected by everyone that knew him through his career from banking to finance for the County of Oxford, part time City of Woodstock transit operator. He was known as “Saturday Sam.” He transferred vehicles from the west coast to the east coast, driving was his passion. A favorite past-time was always driving his red Thunderbird convertible. We especially want to thank Dr. Kocsis and all the nurses on Ward 2200 of the Woodstock Hospital who showed Sam such care and compassion. Special thank you to Louise for her daily visits to Sam and to Rev. Shirley Doney for her visits and for her love and compassion.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 31, 2022 at The Church of the Epiphany, 560 Dundas St. Woodstock (corner of Dundas and Wellington Streets.) The funeral service will follow at 12 noon.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that if you wish to donate in Sam’s memory, please consider the Alzheimer Society of Southwest Partners, The Church of the Epiphany or a charity of your choice.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the SMITH-LeROY FUNERAL HOME, 69 Wellington st. North Woodstock, ON (519-537-3611). Personal condolences may be sent at www.smithleroy.com
