July 1955 – August 2022
Ron passed away peacefully with his family by his side on August 14, 2022. Ron was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan and moved to Burnaby, BC in July 1961.
Ron is predeceased by his mother Helen and father Bill and is survived by his wife Marilyn and three children: Chelsea, Tyler (Melissa) and Daren (Carly), and grandson: Brayden, sister: Gerry and brothers: Terry and Wayne, and nieces, nephews, and in-laws.
He served as a professional Fire Fighter for 36 years with the Surrey Fire Service, beginning his career as a fire fighter, then promoted to Captain and finally Chief Fire Prevention Officer. Officer Ron Cross Badge #93 was 67 years old and fought a very brave fight against ALS and he will be missed.
Ron was a very active member with union Local 1271, supporting the local with their efforts, representing members in countless ways. After dealing with his own struggles, Ron spent his lifetime helping numerous people and their families, including members from Local 1271 and the International Association of Fire Fighters get through their struggles with PTSD and substance abuse.
Ron loved riding his Harley, golfing, snowboarding, cycling, wood turning, playing poker, travelling, and heading south for the winters. He had a good sense of humour and was always willing to help others.
The family would like to thank all the staff at Melville Hospice and the doctor and nurse who assisted Ron in his final moments. Ron left us on his own terms with dignity and grace after a long battle with ALS.
Ron’s Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, August 28, 2022, at 5pm at Port Kells Church 19131 88 Ave. Surrey, BC. The celebration will continue at Station 1271, following a march from the church. The family would appreciate if members wore their dress uniforms.
In Ron’s memory, and in lieu of flowers, the family would like to have donations sent to the ALS Society of BC, specifically, Project Hope, or ALS Action Canada.
