Obituary
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ron Landry, cherished husband, dad, grandpa and uncle. Ron passed away peacefully, after a long battle with cancer on Friday, January 21, 2022.
Joseph Michel Ronald was born on August 5, 1943 in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, He was raised in the small, French, farming community of Courval, Saskatchewan. Ron received his early education in Gravelbourg and Courval, graduating from Notre Dame College in Prince Albert. He earned his Bachelor of Education Degree from the University of Saskatchewan.
Ron accepted his first teaching position in Willow Bunch, Saskatchewan where he met the love of his life, Jeanine Clavelle. In the fall of 1966, Ron and Jeanine accepted teaching positions in Roblin. They were married March 27, 1967. Their move was to be for one year before returning to university. 55 years later Roblin was still their home.
Ron loved teaching and interacting with young people. Nothing warmed his heart more than a note or visit from a former student. French and General Business were his subjects of choice. Ron had a great relationship with his students because he always considered himself a learner like them. He was constantly challenging himself with new and interesting adventures from selling World Book to exotic animals. When health issues no longer made it possible for him to continue in his chosen profession, Ron focused his energy on other areas of interest. He retired from teaching in 1993.
One of the ventures he was most proud of was the large greenhouse operation which started out as a backyard hobby at his home on Hospital Street. After moving to an acreage west of town, Ron had the opportunity to nurture his lifelong love of animals. He was always looking for a new variety of animal to invest in, from Katahdin sheep to raising exotics like ostriches and emus, bison and his favourite miniature horses. Nothing was too challenging. He loved working with his horses training them for parades, shows and sales. A visit to the farm usually ended in a ride on the cart drawn by his favourite Appaloosa, Palermo.
Community was very important to Ron. He was constantly looking for ways to attract business to Roblin. He was instrumental in bringing Canmark Hog Barn to our area as well as building a “home away from home” the Harvest Moon Inn. He served on numerous executives and committees, The Knights of Columbus, Elks, Intermountain Teachers Association, town council, Roblin Credit Union, Elk Growers Association, National/Provincial Ostrich and Emu Association to list just a few.
He was a faithful member of Sacred Heart Parish, serving on the pastoral council as well as teaching catechism.
Ron loved being outdoors. Safety was important to him and he instructed many, young and old in Hunter, Snowmobile and Boating Safety. In recent years he filled his time with fishing, playing cards and wood working. Ron and Jeanine’s love of travel took them to Australia, Europe and all over North America. Special to them were their 10 winters spent in Paradise Park, McAllen, Texas.
Ron was predeceased by his mother, Alice (Tremblay) in 1947; his father, Joe; stepmother, Emilienne and his in-laws, Raoul and Marie Clavelle, Raolu Jr., Evelyn and Lyle.
Left to mourn his passing are his wife, Jeanine and their three children, daughter, Yvette (Doug) Bailes of Roblin, sons, Don (Tara) and Patrick (Joni) of Calgary and seven grandchildren, Emilie, Cooper, Charlie, Isla, Archer, Sullivan and Noelle. He is also survived by his brothers, Gilles, Luc and Gerard (Maureen) and sister, Adèle Hanson along with his brothers- in-law, Roger, Armand (Deb), Denis, Joe (Gwen), Ed, Pat (Arlene) and Richard Clavelle; sisters-in-law, Annette (Ron) Mocyk, Yvette Vindeg, Rita (Gordon) Mielke, Laura (Rick) Schwark as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
