Robert Theodore “Gus” Meister
1927-2022
Meister, Robert Theodore
“Gus” – age 94, passed away peacefully in Valley
Regional Hospital, Kentville on Sunday, March 6, 2022. Born in
Yarmouth in 1927 and moved to Kentville that same year. He was the
youngest child of the late Ralph and Muriel (Margeson) Meister. He was
predeceased in 2018 by his wife of 69 years, Janet (Houghton); his
sister, Edna (Penny, MacLeod); brothers, Douglas, Frederick
“Freddie” MM (WWII) and
Gordon.
They had four children, Janet (Peter) Clarke,
Woodville; Larry (Susan) Riverview, NB; Linda (Mike) Foster, Grafton;
and Beverly (Brian) Ferguson, Hazlet, SK; nine grandchildren, 15
great-grandchildren, 1 great great-grandchild and many nephews and
nieces, especially Loretta Chiasson (Penny), Aylesford; Gloria Graham
(Penny, Wood), Kingston; and Gordon (Judy) Penny,
Greenwood.
He attended Kings County Academy. Sports were
Gus’ friend. He played hockey for the Baptist Church League,
the School League and the Town League. He was a member of the 1943
Nova Scotia Junior School Championship. He played in the original
Softball League when the only players to wear gloves were the catcher
and the first baseman. He was a member of the Glooscap Curling Club
and an avid curler. He was on teams winning the NS Senior Johnson Cup
twice (1972/1990) and two NS Championships
(1982/1989).
He worked various jobs until his retirement in
1992 after more than 30 years as a Protection Officer with the Federal
Department of Fisheries and Oceans. He said his favorite job was the
12 years he worked in the automobile business for the late C.B.
Robinson. Gus was well liked and was a man of his
word.
His greatest joy in life was “when
Janet from Halls Harbour came down the North Mountain and never went
back”. They married in 1948. He always said if every family
had what his family had there would not be any problems in the
world.
His family would like to thank the staff of
Valley Regional – Med A, especially Dr. Melissa Anne
Broaders, for the exceptional care and compassion he received during
his time there.
Cremation has taken place. There will be no
