Obituary
With comfort knowing that Bob is in a better place, his family announces his passing on June 24, 2022 at the Gilbert Plains Personal Care Home. He is now reunited with his wife Mel and daughter Brenda. The last few years Bob had been afflicted with dementia. The family is grateful and appreciative for the care he received at Gilbert Plains and express gratitude to the caring staff.
Bob was born on November 16, 1934 in Weyburn, Saskatchewan to Charles and Mae Sawyer. He was the middle sibling to sister Eloise and brother Glen. His younger days were spent living in many towns where his dad worked as a grain buyer. Bob’s life took a turn when his father died at a young age from a grain elevator accident. His mother with his siblings moved to Gilbert Plains and many new friends and memories were made. Bob would call GP his home and in later life he would become a member of the Gilbert Plains Golf Club and spend summers in the campground.
Bob married Amelia (Mel) Rzesnoski on September 23, 1955. Brad and Brenda soon followed, and life took them to many places (Bowsman, Artland, Somme and Carrot River) following his career as a grain buyer with both Manitoba Wheat Pool and Saskatchewan Wheat Pool. Eventually they settled back to Dauphin. He was in partnership for a few years with his brother-in-law, Ross Irvine in the operation of Parkland Food Mart. He ended his life’s work by being an insurance agent for Federated Insurance which led to the purchase of Stark & Pitch Agencies in Dauphin and renaming the business Sawyer Agencies. Bob was a fair and dedicated insurance agent/broker always going above and beyond for his clients. He brought Remax to the town of Dauphin, combining insurance and real estate all in one office. Throughout his life he was active in volunteer groups such as the Elks Club in Saskatchewan and the Lions Club in Dauphin. Bob was an avid fisherman achieving many Master Angler awards, had an intense passion for golf and even made the championship final at the Tamarack Golf tournament in Clear Lake. In those days, the final games were televised on TV and it was exciting to watch him play his game. He also enjoyed the game of curling. These sports kept him busy all year long.
Retirement years were enjoyed by spending winters in Weslaco, Texas where both Bob and Mel met life long friends while enjoying their favorite sport of golf. Summers were spent between Hill’s Camp at the Waterhen and golfing/camping at Gilbert Plains. Later years took him to playing senior men’s golf at Dauphin Lake. Like it or not, Bob was a stickler for rules and this applied to everything especially golf.
Bob was a proud Grandpa to Cayley, Jordan and Breanne Sawyer and Ryan and Elise Auger. He was constantly pulling little pranks on the grandkids and later his great-grandchildren. The grandchildren brought out his younger self. He took great pleasure in watching their activities and always showed care and love towards them.
Being the Scotsman that he was, he could be quick tempered and very stubborn. He had determination to do things his own way and this characteristic allowed him to overcome many obstacles that life presented him.
Bob was predeceased by his wife Mel, daughter Brenda and sister Eloise. He is survived by his son Brad and daughter in law Marie, son in law Denis Auger, five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren as well as his brother Glen and his wife Ruth.
The family takes comfort in knowing that his suffering is now over. As per Bob’s wishes, a private family Celebration of Life will take place at a later date. Donations in memory of Bob may be made to the Gilbert Plains Personal Care Home.
Rest in Peace-You will not be forgotten.
