Obituary
With heavy, heavy hearts we announce the sudden passing of Robert (Bob) James Sumner at the age of 90+. He leaves behind his beloved wife Maureen of 33 wonderful years. Bob is survived by his daughter Jill, and grandchildren Lane (Megan) and Claire, son Bob (Diana), grandchild Alex, daughter Joan and estranged son Mark. Bob also leaves behind his brother Bill. He was predeceased by his parents, sister Joan and brother Jeff.
Bob was born in Winnipeg, MB to Jim and Dorothy Sumner. He lived in Winnipeg until he was 16 years of age when the family moved to Calgary. He thrived in Calgary and graduated from Central High School. Soon after graduation, Bob attended the University of Oklahoma and received his degree in Petroleum Engineering. He came back to Canada and worked in the oil and gas industry across Western Canada settling in Calgary where he married and started his family. He moved his family to Edmonton for a few years and then back to Calgary.
Bob worked in the Petroleum industry for 58 years until he was 80 years old with various companies eventually starting his own company which he retired from. He and Maureen retired to the Okanagan in BC in 2015 and enjoyed the slower pace along with the warmth and sunshine.
Bob’s hobbies were golf, racket ball, skiing, bicycling and world travel. He was able to visit many destinations, some great golf trips, some cycling trips and a few cruises.
Most of all, Bob enjoyed meeting new people and always keeping in touch with his extended family and old and new friends. He had just, in fact, had lunch in Calgary with three of his high school friends a few days before his passing. Bob was a “people person” and enjoyed all life had to offer!
Bob volunteered with the Calgary Stampede for many years and he would appreciate any charitable donations in his memory to be forwarded to the Calgary Stampede Foundation at 1410 – Olympic Way S.E., Calgary, AB, T2G 2W1 in care of Sarah Hayes.
A possible celebration of life will be announced at a later date.
