We are saddened to announce the passing of our brother, Robert, at Kootenay Lake Hospital on Friday, April 29, 2022, at the age of 78. He had been experiencing some health issues for some time, and a heavy cold combined with COPD was just too much to overcome. He died peacefully with family nearby.
Bob was born in Nelson to Harry & Mary Winlaw Horton & spent his childhood & most of his life here. He left a few times for work, but like so many was always drawn back to this beautiful place where his family was. Nelson was an ideal place for a kid like Bob to grow up – lakes, streams, forests, – places to hunt, fish, explore, and of course winding mountain roads to speed along when he got a bit older. Bob graduated from LV Rogers Secondary, then became a heavy-duty mechanic. Most of his working life was in forestry & KPF, then he worked various jobs, usually for friends.
In his younger years, Bob was a very good trap shooter, had a keen interest in tropical fish, cars, a great love of animals – especially cats, and always was an avid reader. He was also known for liking to share a brew or two with friends.
Surviving him are his three sisters: Menette Brooks, Mary-Louise Horton (Mike Mooney), Nancy Horton (Pat Gelinas), their children, grandchildren, & several cousins. Bob was pre-deceased by his parents and his aunt, Carmen Horton, who was always very special to him. At Bob’s request there will be no service. His cremated remains will be interned with our parents in the Nelson Cemetery.
We would like to thank many people: The doctors and nurses at KLH who treated Bob & his sister with such care & compassion. His friends, at the Kiwanis Villa and elsewhere who kept in touch with Bob over the years, Dr Kirsten and his staff, and lastly the people at Thompson’s Funeral Service for being so excellent at what they do. Bless you all.
If you would like to do something to remember Bob, just go a bit out of your way to be kinder to a person or an animal – our brother would like that.
