Robert D. MacKinnon Hazel F. MacKinnon
June 19, 1926 – December 7, 2022 August 17, 1935 – July 24, 2021
“Now is the hour when we must say goodbye”. With my talented wife Hazel playing the piano
and singing, Les on vibes, Murray on accordion, and me on the drums, Music Unlimited ended
every dance we played with this well-known song. That was many “musical years” ago. I now say
goodbye to my wonderful, talented daughters Marlene Creaser (Mesa, Arizona) and Diane Butcher
(Duncan, B.C.), who brought musical joy to my life. “So long, Farewell” to my granddaughters
Caelan (Sean) Brennan (Arizona), Brielle (Levi) Hawkes (Arizona), Ashleigh Butcher (Victoria, B.C.)
and Mia Butcher (Victoria, B.C.) for their outstanding academic and musical talents that made me
the proudest “Poppy” in the universe. “So long, it’s been good to know you” to my sons-in-law Jim
Creaser and Marty Butcher, two super talented guys. I had a very successful 42 – year advertising
career with Eaton’s in Calgary, retiring in 1991 to enjoy golfing with Hazel-we spent many happy
hours hitting that little white ball around the course. I was lucky to get a hole-in-one on June 6,
2000, in a seniors’ tournament (par 3, 167 yards). “It don’t mean a thing, if you ain’t got that swing”.
Dad passed away peacefully in hospital after a short illness. At 96, it was remarkable that he was
able to live an active life (including living in his own home and driving) until the week before
his death. “It took a village” to support Dad to maintain such quality of life, and we extend our
deepest thanks to Dr. Ismail, Dr. Burger, nurses Pat and Leah, and staff at Valley Medical Clinic;
Jason and staff of Mann’s Pharmacy; Cathy (foot care nurse); Lance and Joey (for maintaining the
yard to Dad’s very particular standards); staff at Save-On Foods (who always gave a shout out to
dad when the fresh Greek salad had arrived), Cowichan District Hospital ER and 2-south health
care professionals and support staff, and all of Dad’s friends and neighbors (both near and far)-all
of these relationships were so very significant for Dad. Such a very rich village.
Dad was predeceased by his mother Edith Wilson, father Rev. Dr. R.H. MacKinnon, nephew Kirk,
sister Edith, brother Jim (2017), brother George (2022), and wife Hazel (July 2021). At Bob’s request
there will be no service, reception, or memorial. Cremation has taken place at H.W. Wallace
Cremation and Burial Centre (Duncan, B.C.).
