Richard passed away peacefully at his home in Victoria, B.C. on January 3rd, 2022, at a time of his choosing and in the company of his immediate family, following a lengthy illness. Richard was born in New Westminster, B.C. on December 1st, 1941, to his parents Bruce and Margery Bryson. Richard will be deeply missed by his wife of 54 years, Sandra, his siblings Elaine (Al) and Rob, his children David (Caron) and Neala (Troy), and his grandchildren Taewyn, Mhina, Daragh, Cian and Criona.
Richard was a loving son, brother, husband, father, uncle and grandfather. After graduating from New Westminster Secondary School, Richard worked for the Royal Bank of Canada for more than 40 years, where he made lifelong friends. It was while working that Richard first met Sandra, recently emigrated from England and starting a nursing career in Canada. Work took them and their family to Burns Lake, Delta, Vernon, Kelowna and Cranbrook before returning to the Vancouver area.
A shared passion of Richard and Sandra’s was gardening. Avid members of gardening clubs in South Surrey, they built a dream garden on their acreage, creating a natural oasis for them and a natural playground for their grandchildren. Richard also loved travelling, both with Sandra, as well as with his children and grandchildren; the trip to England in June 2019 will be a special memory for all, as were trips with special friends to Europe, Hawaii and the Maritimes.
Following his retirement, Richard became an avid woodcarver, making many good friends and creating duck carvings and whimsical fairy houses that will be treasured. Richard was also a significant contributor to the community with volunteer roles with the YMCA in New Westminster, several Rotary Clubs, the Peace Arch Rhododendron Society, the Probus Club of Royal Oak and at Goward House in Victoria, B.C.
Richard was a loving man, a loyal friend, a skilled artist, quick to laugh, reliable, supportive and compassionate. Richard was always up for an adventure, from cross-country skiing, boating and camping, to the many other endeavours that he would want to try. Family was his most important and lasting legacy. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Richard will be buried at Royal Oak Burial Park in Victoria, B.C. The family’s heartfelt thanks go to friends, family and medical professionals who have supported Richard during the past two years. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Gardens at HCP www.hcp.ca
