Richard was born 3rd of 10 siblings on June 8th, 1952 in Macklin, Saskatchewan to Albert and Mary Gette. He resided on the farm and attended a local schoolhouse until grade 10, where he then finished off high school at St. Thomas all boys boarding school.
Following this, Richard moved to Swan Hills, Alberta, working in the oilfield while finishing his Electrical ticket. In 1974 he had the opportunity to relocate to Brooks, Alberta. Richard immediately jumped at the chance to move anywhere south of Swan Hills. This is where he met his soon-to-be wife, Kathy. After courting her for a few short months, Richard couldn’t hold off anymore and popped the question.
Married July 24th, 1976, they continued to call Brooks home, starting their life in a brand new home in Ingram Park. This is where they welcomed their first daughter Christa to the world in 1978. Richard heart was always on the farm, and knowing that their family was sure to grow, they made the move to Rosemary to be able to provide Christa and his future kids a farm up-bringing. It didn’t take long for Richard’s second daughter Joelle to arrive on the farm in 1980. Seeing a trend, they decided to build a bigger home just in time to welcome their only son Kyle in 1984.
Farming and working at Lakeside full-time was hard but, rewarding and provided his family a good life. They lived on the farm until 2001, when Richard and Kathy decided to build a new home/ bed and breakfast at lake Newell with the help of their son Kyle. After a health scare Richard then decided to make some major life changes including leaving Lakeside after nearly 30 years and starting a new career as a Financial Planner with Investors Group, where he would work until retiring at the age of 67.
In his final years, Richard did not slow down but sped up, traveling the world with his wife Kathy, including joining a trick riding tour to Australia with his granddaughter Avery. Richard was an avid Rotarian, increasing his involvement in Rotary by serving in many positions. Including traveling to El Salvador to aid in building homes with Shelter Canada and participating in the Rotary International friendship exchange in South Africa. He was also a crucial member of the Los Amigos group which donated and drove desperately needed emergency equipment and vehicles down to Mexico.
After retirement he and Kathy, with an invite from a friend, discovered La Manzanilla, where they spent their last couple winters as snowbirds, developing a beautiful community of new friends.
On March 9th, 2022, Richard passed away during a deep-sea fishing adventure with his friends…Yes that’s not a typo: Richard, the human rock who was afraid of water, took his last breath after landing a 50 lb Marlin.
He is survived by his lovely wife Kathy; his daughter Christa and her husband Gerald, their children Avery, Saige and Dreyton Aleman; his daughter Joelle her husband Tyler, and their children Archer, Owen and Ivy Powell; and his son Kyle, his wife Julie, and their children Adeline and Emma Gette. His Siblings David, Cathy, Gerard, Paulette, Delilah, Florian, Jean, Victor, Duane.
Richard will always be remembered as an amazing, noble, honest, and selfless man, that we know will continue to watch over all of us.
