Obituary
Alan passed away peacefully in his 94th year on May 31, 2022 at Muskoka Landing in Huntsville, after a brief illness. Predeceased by his loving wife of 66 years, Betty Bowes (nee Speedie). Survived and lovingly remembered by his children Anne D’Andrea (Mike), Julie Bowes (Stephen), Shawn Bowes, Jane Bowes Poulsen (Niels), Gloria Bowes (Randy) and Amy Piché (Paul).
Cherished brother of Margaret Leduc (Wayne, deceased), sister-in-law Hazel Bowes (Jack, deceased) and sister-in-law Dorothy Bowes (Lyle, deceased). Also predeceased by sister Joan Mann and her husband George Mann.
Proud Grandfather to Shawn D’Andrea (Michelle), Mark D’Andrea (Jasmind), Karen D’Andrea (Justin), Sarah D’Andrea, Andrea Abraham (Therese), Meaghan Brennan (Jon), Karli Kuchinski, Micheal Piché and predeceased by Jessica Hope Piché. Lovingly remembered by his Aunt Olive Zeggil. Also cherished by eight great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.
Alan was born in Collingwood to Richard Clarence Bowes and Euphemia Ellen Zeggil (both deceased). Alan proudly served in the Royal Canadian Navy from 1949 to 1954 and was a Veteran of the Korean War. From 1954 to 1986, Alan was a Forester with Ontario Hydro, retiring in New Liskeard (now Temiskaming Shores).
After retirement, Alan and Betty began the next phase of their life moving to Wild Goose Lake, Geraldton, where they enjoyed many adventures, hunting, fishing, enjoying the outdoors and many good friends. Alan had a trap line and Betty had her prospectors license, laying out claims around the property. From Geraldton they relocated to Thunder Bay where they continued their passion for the outdoors, taking annual fishing and camping trips, and a deck of cards was always on hand.
In 2014, they moved back to the Muskoka’s and took up residence in Utterson. Where ever they went, their door was always open and willing to lend a helping hand. Alan enjoyed a good story and eager to reminisce to anyone who would lend an ear.
Alan also played the bagpipes and was a member of various pipe bands through the years, playing in many parades and events, and was also the piper at many a wedding.
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the staff at Muskoka Landing for their outstanding care, compassion and support during his time at the Landing.
If desired, donations could be made to the Alzheimer’s Society or the Huntsville District Memorial Hospital, or to the charity of your choice.
A Memorial Service will take place on Thursday, August 4, 2022 at 2:00 pm at Reynolds Funeral home.
