Rev William Peter Antony Malton 2022

Rev. William “Peter” Antony’s Obituary
Rev. William Peter Antony Malton ~ Peter died peacefully on Saturday, December 3, 2022, at home in Centreville, Kings Co., NS.
He is survived by sons, Jonathan (Marilyn), Andrew (Anna), and daughter, Helena “Mel”. He is predeceased by his wife, Anne (Tanton) and son, Dominic, his younger sister, Monica (David) Hayes and younger brother, Stephen. He is mourned by his grandchildren, Nathaniel (Mary), Sunny (Kalene), Ioanna, Sebastian (Caroline), and Margaret, and by his great-grandchildren, Johanna, Rupert, Briar, and Eleanor.
He was born on April 22, 1933, in Kimberley, South Africa, the eldest of three children. His parents, the late Rev. Stewart Malton and the late Zillah Beatrice (Eades), were serving as missionaries at the time. The family returned to England from Africa shortly after Peter’s birth.
Peter was educated at Worksop College in Nottinghamshire, and received his divinity degree from Kings College, London, where he met Anne. He was ordained deacon in the Church of England shortly before they married and made priest soon after.
He was rector of Blackbird Leys, Oxford, and was instrumental in planting the Holy Family Anglican Parish Church there in the early 1960s. He was also rector of the Parish Church of All Saints in Pitsford, Northamptonshire.
In 1966, he emigrated with his family to Canada, settling in Bracebridge, Ontario. In the same year, he began attending Waterloo Lutheran University, from which he received a MSW degree. In the following years, he worked in the social services in Muskoka, later becoming senior administrator at the Huronia Regional Centre. In the mid-1980s, he and his family moved to Toronto, where he worked as an administrator in the Ministry of Community and Social Services.
Peter was an award-winning, enthusiastic, and talented amateur actor and director, performing in and producing plays for many years at the Gravenhurst Opera House, and other venues, along with his wife, Anne, who was also a talented actor and costume designer.
In the 80s, Peter and Anne bought a 100-acre farm in Muskoka, where they spent many happy years, raising goats and chickens, and working part time in the social services sector. Later, exercising his Anglican priestly ministry, Peter enjoyed many years as an honorary associate in various parishes in Ontario.
Peter and Anne moved again in 2007, this time to Nova Scotia with their daughter Mel. He was honorary associate priest of the Parish of St. James, Kentville, and later with the Anglican Parishes of Aylesford and Berwick.
Despite deteriorating eyesight in his later years, Peter enjoyed reading history and theology, and was a particular admirer of the writer Diarmid McCullough. Peter was a wonderful preacher, a teacher of ancient and Biblical Greek, a witty and wise friend and mentor to many, and a dedicated Anglican. He will be remembered for his warmth, kindness, and great charm.
Warm thanks for amazing care are due to Dr. Crystal Todd, the Senior HomeCare by Angels caregivers, and the nurses and home support workers of the VON, without whom his gentle passing at home, in the loving care and attendance of Mel and her friend Ren, would not have been possible.
A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. AST, Thursday, December 8, in St. Mary’s Anglican Church, 20 Morden Rd., Auburn, with Rev. Lynn Uzans officiating. For those unable to attend the service there will be a livestreaming of the service available at 1:25 p.m., Thursday, December 8, AST by selecting the ‘livestream’ option at the top of the funeral home webpage.
