Raymond George Whittaker
January 15, 1938 ~ September 1, 2022 (age 84)
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Raymond George Whittaker, which occurred at his home in Saint John, NB, surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, September 1, 2022.
Ray is survived by his loving wife, Margaret Rose Whittaker (nee Lawrence) of 51 years. He was the proud father of Michael (Sara) Whittaker, Michelle (Thom Fulton), Mark Whittaker (April Cunningham). He was the cherished Grampy of Stephanie, Madison, Eric, Craig, Lauren, Nicholas, Katie, Silas, Leo and Callum; and great-grandfather of Noelle. Ray is survived by brothers Ronald Whittaker, Robert Whittaker (Marilyn), Donald Whitaker (Autumn) and Murray Whitaker (Christine); sisters Mary Ann Collette (Robert), Lynda Gilbert (Greg), Brenda Whitaker (Patrick Mulcahy); and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister-in-law Shirley Whittaker and his parents Alfred and Margaret of Saint John.
A graduate of St. Malachy’s Memorial High School in 1957, Ray was heavily involved in hockey and that continued into his late 60s when he played on senior teams around Saint John. Ray was an excellent golfer and longtime member of the Hampton Golf & Country Club and played as often as he could. In 2017, he won first place in a provincial tournament where he was named Top Senior. A retired federal public servant in the Department of Agriculture for 30 years, Ray was informed and curious, an avid reader of history and current events. As much as he valued solitude, he also loved getting out for walks and daytrips at some of his favourite New Brunswick destinations. A supportive and loving father, Ray was always there for his children when they needed him. He was a playful and doting grandfather, developing special relationships with his grandchildren and great-granddaughter. For many years, Ray and Margaret loved to dance.
Ray died of cancer, which recently returned after long periods of remission. We will miss him deeply every day.
Arrangements are under the care of Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road, Saint John, NB (646-2424). A memorial service will be held in the funeral home chapel on Tuesday, September 6, 2022 at 11 am. For those who wish, in lieu of flowers, donations in Ray’s memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, or to a charity of the donor’s choice. For those in attendance, a mask would be appreciated.
