Obituary
RALPH WESLEY COOK
March 26, 1954 – August 5, 2022
On 5th August 2022, Ralph Wesley Cook passed away suddenly and is survived by his wife Lois Cheryl Cook, their daughter and sons, their spouses, as well as four grandchildren. He was born in Wetaskiwin on the 26th of March 1954 to Roy Benton Cook and Bertha Eileen Cook and came home to a large farm family near Pipestone Alberta. On the 27th of August 1983 he married Lois, building their house alongside some friends which was always a source of future renovation work and many many Dad jokes.
While working a demanding job, Ralph got his Journeyman Instrumentation Mechanic ticket by studying at night, and worked in that field for the rest of his working life. His job took him to many places around the world where he was always keen to bring something back for his family, traveling to Cuba, Argentina, Dubai, and Germany. He was proud to have taught his children to love the outdoors alongside his supportive wife, though somewhat mystified when they all declined to pick up fishing too.
Ralph was also always keen to wiggle his ears to amuse kids, and sometimes the adults around him, having practiced long hours in a mirror to achieve this physical feat. He found himself disappointed to not have been born during the gold rush years, but made up for that with many impromptu early mornings whilst camping and kept a keen eye out for unusual and valuable rocks. He also made sure that his family got to see the bulk of BC from the family vehicle, and was only mildly disappointed when prize catches were lost (on two separate occasions, years apart) by earnest sons who wanted to “wash” his fish. He was a storyteller who told it from the point of view of whichever critter had frustrated, or amused him in the barnyard that day.
Finally, Ralph helped with his hands, as he had built up a lifetime of skills that let him build or fix nearly anything. He was generous to a fault, often putting himself out to help those he perceived as in need, even when his family barely had more than those he sought to help.
Donations in Ralph’s memory are gratefully accepted to the Alberta Diabetes Foundation.
As per Ralph’s wishes, cremation will take place and a celebration of Ralph’s life will take place at a later date.
