OBITUARY
It is with great sadness and heavy hearts we announce the passing of Ping Lo, with Christian name of Lourdes, peacefully on March 3, 2022, with the love of family surrounded her.
Good as her name “Lourdes”, venerated in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary apparition, means, she is best and affectionately remembered of her being always kind, humble, courageous, selfless, and of her charming smiles, overcoming every adversity, illness and evil in life, and successfully raising five resilient children, including the late Wai Mau, with whom the family still celebrate for his wonderful life despite the fact of his being mentally retarded as of birth.
She will be sadly missed and will always hold a place in the hearts of family, relatives and friends all over the world.
LIFE STORY
Ping’s legacy throughout the course of her 91 years of long life is attributed to her generous but determined characters, which many people aspire to have, but only few actually attain. To name just a few: she never flaunted her affluence, prosperity, accomplishments or anything else she might have; she was always modest and often embarrassed by praise; she was grateful for all people she came across in her life and the opportunities that had been given to her and family.
And she was courteous and kind, even in the most trying circumstances; she never cared too much about her look, nevertheless always reassured dressing well enough to be taken seriously; she did not see things as valuable or more worthy than others because of their monetary value but instead focused the beauty in everything around as being a good person; she was never boastful or exaggerated, instead always lived by the creed “what you see is what you get” because she knew that her good deeds would speak for themselves.
And she knew that happiness cannot be bought and thus never spent on herself what she could instead use to help her children or others; she was never jealous of others’ success but instead applauded the accomplishments of other people, particularly those of her brothers and sisters, as she would her own; she never put down or discouraged those around her for doing good work because she knew too well what it feels like to struggle;
And she, then as a mother of more than 85 years old, demonstrated extraordinary resilience in taking care of her disabled son, the late Wai Mau, who had been suffering all kinds of struggles because of cancer throughout the last 4 years of his life until he passed away in year 2020.
And she was never the kind who will be high maintenance and never satisfied with the way things are, but instead believed life should have many ups and downs because she had seen it all before since early childhood;
And she was most thankful for having known Sister Mary Ignatia McNally of Maryknoll Mission, family’s “grandma”, who had influenced and inspired her most throughout life, as she learnt from Sister Ignatia, renowned legend amongst the religious communities about all her charitable deeds and compassionate cares to sick in the countries of China, Hong Kong and Taiwan between years 1933 through 2011; and she valued and cherished highly her Christian beliefs in fulfilling a fruitful and meaningful life.
And she understood that dwelling on things from the past or memories would do nothing to help her moving forward, but instead focused her energy and thought on her beloved children and what were happening in front of her; she was always positive to life; she never gave up but instead fought and conquered against illness until the final dreadful moment in the hospital.
From the perspective as her children, we are the poorer for losing her so suddenly, but definitely the richer for having her as our mother with such fabulous and admirable characters.
