Obituary
Johnson, Phyllis Marie
1940-2022
Phyllis Marie Johnson passed away suddenly and unexpectedly at her home in Sylvan Lake at the age of 82. She was the second child and eldest daughter of Annie and Ken Grey of the Oklahoma district, outside of Innisfail. She grew up with siblings Bob (Bernice) Grey, Blair Grey (deceased), Dale (Doreen) Grey and Barbara (Peter) Daum.
Mom received her Secretarial Certificate from Reeves Business school and took a job at the Bowden Refinery, where she met Howard, and they married in August 1962. Together they raised Bill and Pearl. And in 2019 she was happily reunited with her eldest daughter Sharon which filled the void that had been held in her heart for many years.
After short stints in Sylvan, Edmonton and Red Deer, in 1978 mom and dad moved back to Sylvan and made it their forever home. Mom took a job with the Town of Sylvan Lake, and she remained there until her retirement in 2003.
Growing up, mom did it all. Wife, mother, worked full time. She was a Cub Scout leader, a Brownie Leader, she drove countless boys around Alberta to minor league hockey games, worked the kitchen at the arena, and bless her heart she tried to teach Bill and Pearl piano, but to preserve family harmony, she eventually relented, and we had to get an independent teacher.
Mom and dad loved camping, they didn’t need to go far, they just needed to go. In retirement, they took more extended trips with the trailer, but their happy place was Crimson Lake, and the only thing that could make it happier was when granddaughters Kaitlin and Jaylene were able to come and stay with them.
After dads passing in 2012, mom found renewed comfort and community in the church. She was active in many aspects including Pastoral Care, singing in the choir, assisting with transportation to and from church for those unable to drive and much more.
Additional volunteering saw mom “working” at the Blood Services Donation office in Red Deer for 10 years. For the first 8, she volunteered every Saturday and the last 2 years she had reduced her time to every other Saturday. She enjoyed helping the donors and she was much loved by the donors as well as the staff.
Moms need to stay active had her involved in the Sylvan Seniors Bus Association, she participated in Senior walking group, the Condo Coffee group and it seems to go on and on.
Anyone that knew mom, knew that crocheting was her past time of choice. Afghans, sweaters, scarves, you name it. After recently realizing she had an abundance of those, she began to crochet baby toques to donate to the Neo Natal unit of the RD Hospital. She was most proud of crocheting 4 “pumpkin” toques for a set of quads born in October. (The picture is in the slide show)
Mom leaves to mourn her children: Sharon (John) Gough, Bill (Lee) Johnson, Pearl (Mike Nylin); granddaughters: Kaitlin (Alex) and Jaylene (Tristan); as well as a great granddaughter Evelynn, and many members of extended family and friends.
Mom loved the community and fellowship of her family, friends, neighbors and church.
And in that spirit, we invite you to join us to remember the wonderful lady that she was.
