Blessed with a long and fulfilling life, Phyllis passed away a few weeks after reaching the centenarian milestone.
Phyllis is lovingly remembered by her daughter Kathy (Henry) Wiegman, daughter-in-law Bonnie Hunter, devoted niece Ellen Thompson, grandchildren Michael Lefurgey, Chris (Amanda) Lefurgey, Joseph Hunter, Mary Hunter, Jeffrey (Fa-Linn) Kubik, Dan Kubik, Phyllis (Bill) Bonnello, Katie (Ewen) Cuthiell, Jon Wiegman, Aaron Wiegman, Renee Wiegman (Jeet Jermana), seven great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews and many friends in the Ensign-Brant, Milo, Vulcan and Seasons-High River communities. Phyllis lost her husband Jack Hunter, son Ron Hunter, 2 daughters and their husbands Jan and Dave Lefurgey, Wendy and Jack Kubik, nephew Ken Prentice, 3 siblings and their spouses Jim and Brenda Prentice, Helen and Haldor Thompson, Bob and Betty Prentice and many relatives and friends.
Phyllis grew up east of Milo on her parents’ farm, attended the one-room Liberty School, worked for room and board to attend high school in Milo, and then earned a teaching certificate from Normal School in Calgary. When teaching for 2 years at East Majorville School, Phyllis met Jack. Early in their 43 year marriage, they settled to farm at Ensign and rear their family. Phyllis substitute taught to supplement the farm income and enjoyed community involvement. In the early eighties, they moved to Vulcan. With the purpose of making new friends in her new community, Phyllis became an Avon lady and a town librarian in addition to sub-teaching.
Widowed for 35 years, Phyllis was sustained by her faith in Jesus Christ and supported within her church family at Bethel Lutheran and close community friends. A life-long learner, Phyllis took up the computer at age 80. Described by her grands as smart about life, and petite but mighty, Phyllis valued her independence. With gentle acceptance, Phyllis was a good listener, and welcomed those who were new or hurting. Families Matter Calgary was dear to her heart.
A family memorial is delayed due to Covid. Phyllis will be laid to rest with her husband Jack at the Vulcan Cemetery.
