Obituary for
Peter Trynchy
It is with great sadness that the family of Peter Trynchy announce his passing on November 21, 2022, at the age of 91 years. His presence will be missed by his son, Marlin Trynchy (Janet Gervais); daughter, Darlene (Val) Langevin; grandchildren, Christopher, Jeffery, James (Jackie) and Ashten (Sheldon); as well as five great-grandchildren. He is survived by his brothers, Nick (Faye) and Jim; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Peter was predeceased by his wife, Lorraine; brothers, Steve, Bill, and Joe; sister, Anna; and parents, Petro and Anna.
Born and raised in Rochfort Bridge, Alberta, Peter attended school there while helping out on the family homestead. After meeting the love of his life, Lorraine, they married in 1952 and made a move to Vermilion, Alberta, where he worked at the Searle Grain Elevator. Shortly after, they returned home to Mayerthorpe where he managed the Searle Grain Elevator. Life got a lot more hectic when he and Lorraine welcomed their two children in the mid-50s.
As if work and raising kids was not enough, Peter was also a proud member of the local business community, having established a successful farm equipment dealership. He was also an active community member, serving as a Mayerthorpe town councillor for six years, and was involved in organizations, including, the Mayerthorpe Masonic Lodge, K-40 Kinsmen Club, the Royal Canadian Legion, and the Mayerthorpe Chamber of Commerce.
They say that timing is everything, and in 1970 Peter made the decision to run as a Progressive Conservative Party candidate under the leadership of Peter Lougheed. His intuition and hard work paid off and he won a seat in the 1971 general election to become MLA of Whitecourt. Peter would go on to serve a total of eight terms, holding the title of MLA and the Minister of various departments including Recreation and Parks, Occupational Health and Safety, and Workers’ Compensation Board, and Transportation and Utilities. His political career spanned 30 consecutive years until his retirement in 2001.
Looking back on his time as a politician Peter would often remark at how exciting it was to be part of such significant change in Alberta under the leadership of Lougheed and reminisced about his years spent with the MLAs of the original 1971 caucus and his many constituents and supporters.
During retirement, he enjoyed tending to his apple trees and garden, tinkering with machinery that needed fixing, and feeding the many birds and squirrels that called his yard home. Peter and Lorraine spent most winters in Mesa, Arizona where they welcomed their many friends and family members with open arms for occasional happy-hour drinks and card games.
Peter’s love for his family, friends, and his dedication to serving the people of the province of Alberta will forever be remembered.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Pleasant View Lodge, Mayerthorpe, Points West Living, Red Deer, and Unit 33 Red Deer Regional Hospital for all the care provided.
A Celebration of Life will be held December 5, 2022, at 11:00 am at the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #126, 5111 – 45 Avenue in Mayerthorpe. A private inurnment to follow in the Mayerthorpe Cemetery.

Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Peter
