Peter Stuart Barr, age 89, passed away February 19, 2022 in the hospice at St. Joseph’s Hospital after a short illness. Family was together at his bedside where he was comfortable and pain free until his last breath. He leaves behind a legacy of honesty, hard work from childhood, deep compassion for others and pride in his Scottish ancestry. He loved each member of his family, and they loved him in return. He was a good man, and a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.
Peter was born in St. Joseph’s Hospital on July 9, 1932 and grew up on North Rockwood Avenue, Port Arthur. During the late 1940s he learned how to chair meetings as mayor of Teen Town, a skill that stood him in good stead for the rest of his life. He worked in the auto parts and warehousing industries in the Lakehead, New Zealand, Pennsylvania and Orangeville, Ontario, ending up as Purchasing Agent for Saskatchewan Wheat Pool (now Viterra) in Thunder Bay. A deeply religious man, he was an active member of St. Paul’s United Church for 70 years, serving on committees and organizing events. After joining the Masonic Order, he became Past Master for Connaught Lodge 511 and two lodges in Scottish Rite, receiving his 33rd degree in Winnipeg in 2001. He was also a Shriner, Khartoum Temple. He was a long-time volunteer at the March of Dimes, the Victorian Order of Nurses and many other groups, and chaired the Lac des Mille Lacs Roads Board for several years. He enjoyed fishing at our family camp.
He is survived by Elinor, his wife of 67 years, sons Stuart (Mary Mazurek) and Peter (Lidia Bros), granddaughters Carolyn (Michael Baskin) and Heather (Sara Vickruck), their mother Kathryn, great grandson Leo Barr-Baskin, and Snoopy, the last of many family dogs that he knew and loved. He was predeceased by his parents Peter and Dolly Barr, sister Betty (Haig) Lewis, brother Bill, and twin David at birth.
Cremation has taken place, and his funeral will be held at St. Paul’s United Church on Monday, February 28 at 2 p.m. with Pastor Matthew Diegel officiating. Those attending the service must wear a mask as well as provide proof of double vaccination and proper identification. Those wishing to watch the service virtually may do so on the Sargent & Son Facebook page. In lieu of flowers in his memory, please consider donating to the Underground Gym & Youth Centre (undergroundgym.ca) or to a charity of your choice.
