Obituary
PAUL WESTERVELT MITCHELL (1939-2022)
With heartfelt sadness, the family of Paul Mitchell sadly announce his passing at the age of 83 due to illness. A long-time resident of Sharbot Lake, Paul was the beloved husband, soul-mate and best friend of the late Shirley Marie (Carrothers); cherished father of Cathy (Bob) Lachapelle (Gatineau, Quebec); Deborah Mitchell (Kemptville, Ontario); John Mitchell (Alymer, Quebec); Jay Mitchell (Pamela Crouch) (South Mountain, Ontario); caring stepfather of John Ollson (Lanark, Ontario); Tracey (Ken) Kitt (Dryden, Ontario) ; and Gordon (Natalie) Ollson (North Gower, Ontario); former step-father-in-law of Jean Galligan Ollson (Ottawa, Ontario); and Valerie Meech Ollson (Nepean, Ontario). He is the loving “Grandpa” of many grandchildren, step-grandchildren, and two great grandchildren with a third due this summer.
Paul was the son of the late Matthew Earl Mitchell and the late Lillian Alexandra Reid. He was pre-deceased by his wife, Shirley in April 2020; brothers, David, in 2009 and Peter, in 2021; sister-in-law, Florence Carrothers, in 2021; and brother-in-law, Clifford Carrothers in 2021. Also sadly more recently predeceased by his soon to be daughter-in-law, Beverly Anne Giles, this past May 2022. He is survived by sister-in-laws Olga Mitchell (East Falmouth, Mass.) and Bonnie Mitchell (Two Hills, Alberta); and brother-in-law, Samuel (Pam) Carrothers (Renfrew, Ontario).
Paul was a descendant of United Empire Loyalists who were pioneers in the Brampton area; was a veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces (air) and a retired civilian member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). For many years, he and Shirley enjoyed summers in Sharbot Lake and winters in Panama City Beach, Florida. Paul was his happiest while working on renovations (whether it be on his own home or those of many, many others), golfing, and cheering for his two favourite teams, the Maple Leafs and the Toronto Blue Jays. He also loved nothing more than touring family and friends around the lake in his boat, teaching many to waterski or pulling grandchildren around on a water tube.
It comforts all of us knowing he and Shirley, reunited again after a short absence apart, are enjoying sharing their ‘happy hours’ once again together. Cheers!
