Patricia “Pat” Isabel Joyce
October 10, 1949 to August 9, 2022
On August 9, 2022 Patricia “Pat” Isabel Joyce (née Kyle) passed away in Trail, British Columbia surrounded by her loving family after a brief and brave battle with cancer. Pat was born in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia on October 10, 1949 to John and Margaret Kyle (née Flynn). Pat was the youngest of 5 siblings and is survived by Sheila Chapman (Bernie), Elizabeth Taylor (Bill) and was predeceased by Elaine Bain (Sterling) and Johnny Kyle (Alma).
Pat graduated from East Pictou District High School in 1963 at the age of 15 and began her long career in administration work firstly within the RCMP and eventually in property/retail management. She was a role model in her professionalism and compassion. After Pat’s retirement she took courses from Mount Saint Vincent University followed by many years of volunteering: with the RCMP as a Victim Services Advocate; the Veterans Association; the Capitol Theatre in Moncton NB; and then at the Quarry Theatre. Pat thrived on giving back to her community and to those in need.
Pat and Lloyd Joyce married in 1969 and had three children: Chris Joyce, Sherri Karn (Jesse), and Kelly Joyce who passed away in 1975 at the age of 6 months. Kelly was always missed and never forgotten. Through her marriage to Lloyd their family grew with sisters-in-law Marilyn DeAdder, Melda Dwyer (Billy) and Linda MacDonald (Alan) and all their children on both the Joyce and Kyle sides of the family.
Pat’s pride and joy were her 5 beautiful grandchildren: Sadie and Thane Joyce; and Corbin, Mack and Luke Karn; who cherished their Nana wholeheartedly. Nana loved these kids the hardest, laughed at their shenanigans the loudest, and hung on every word when they spoke and shared stories. Listening to her laugh about the things these kids said and did was always the best!
We asked each of the grandchildren to say their most treasured memory after Nana’s passing. They all put thought and love into this which led to amazing conversations and story telling. The top moments ended up being:
Sadie: Nana orchestrated a cabin vacation to Christina Lake in 2014 with all kinds of fun beach activities.
Thane: The times when they went to the golf course and driving range together.
Corbin: A trip to Mexico together where she always allowed them to indulge in extra ice cream.
Mack: Sneaking into bed early in the mornings with Nana when she visited and having quiet chats.
Luke: When Nana taught him how to fill up the gas tank and he felt so grown up being trusted to do so.
When not bragging about her grandchildren, shopping or volunteering Pat loved playing cards, playing scrabble, kicking butt at hockey pools, cooking, baking, caring for others, writing, reading, the arts and preparing for her next vacation and adventure.
Pat’s Christian faith and relationship with God guided her life. Pat spent many hours within Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Riverview NB, St. Ignatius Catholic Church and Saint Benedict Parish in the Halifax NS area. Pat volunteered whenever she could within the church and support groups.
In lieu of flowers, donations could be made to Chalice Canada (www.chalice.ca) or to the Canadian Cancer Society (www.cancer.ca) or to a charity of your choice.
