Pamela’s Obituary
Spence, Pamela Lynn – age 63, Dartmouth
With love and peace in our hearts, we announce the passing of Pam L. Spence, daughter, granddaughter, sister, niece, aunt, cousin and friend, on Saturday, August 6, 2022 at the Dartmouth General Hospital. When she passed, Pam had family by her side, along with one of the many nurses that cared for her with love over the past 14 months. Pam was born on February 27, 1959 in Halifax. She lived in Amherst in her early years and lived life to the fullest wherever she called home. She was a force of nature and loved her family, friends, fur babies and community with all of her heart and soul. She is survived by her mother Carole (Spicer), brother (Little Bro) Mark (Laura Jean), sister (Snook) Jean (Craig), sister Sherry, brother Graeme (Aarin) and sister Dorothy. She was predeceased by her loving father Marven, Dad Cyril, Papa Mark, Nanny Jean, Nanny Audrey, best friend and dance partner, Philip and fur baby Ebony (the black fury beast). Pam loved all of her nieces and nephews, Jordan, Emma, Abbey, Emily, Griffen, Dylan, Rose, Kyle, Megan (Christian) and Emily. She also loved all of her uncles, aunts, cousins, “froggy babies” and special family friend Cliffe. Pam and her mom Carole (the Old Grey Mare) spent hours talking, doing lexicons and playing contract rummy. They talked about what was new with the family and most recently, the Toronto Blue Jays. Pam formed deep relationships, connecting through her love of fun, laughter, music, games and work. She spent summers in Pugwash, helping at the family store, working alongside her cousin Lee and getting into mischief. During these years she also developed a special relationship with her Nanny Jean, who was always up for a song, card game and going to the races to cheer on Papa Mark’s horses. She worked in insurance for many years, treating colleagues with treats from her desk drawer and home baking, always with rave reviews. When she switched careers to caring for others, Pam’s strengths shown. She worked for RRSS in homes where she cared for those with special needs. She provided the opportunity for independence through the Apartment Program and volunteered her time to help with fundraising through fun Casino Nights. In her role as a teacher’s assistant, Pam realized her skills in teaching and supported and loved her students and their families. Pam grew up among the deaf community, as Marven was mostly deaf. She learned finger spelling at an early age and as an adult, received formal education to learn ASL. She worked at APSEA and, up until her passing, would still sign naturally as she spoke. Pam accepted everyone, embraced diversity and was an example to her family and friends, of love is love, long before global support for the LBGTQ+ community was advocated. Pam was simply the most open, accepting and non-judgemental person. She loved everyone. Since being diagnosed with MS, Pam showed great strength and determination to remain independent. She made the most of every opportunity and was supported along the way by teams within the VON, Northwood Home Care, EHS and Nova Scotia Health. Pam’s home was her castle. Family, friends and support workers would come and go and she listened with keen interest to the stories each person would share. Halloween and Christmas were the “bestest” of holidays for Pam. Her home was always decorated, often with support from her special friends, Pamela and Derek. Everyone looked forward to her Christmas village and, thanks to Derek, the lights of this village will continue to shine. On the shores of the Northumberland Strait, at Breezy Corner, Pam found peace, tranquility and happiness. She hosted some legendary parties, led the singing of silly campfire songs and loved to show us how she could float in the salt water. Her disability eventually took away her ability to enjoy the cottage to the fullest. With her passing, she is now free to swim with the tides and jellyfish, play with the hermit crabs, sing with the peepers and be warmed by eternal campfires. In Pam’s words, she is, “Gooder than ever”. Cremation has taken place at Pam’s request. A celebration of life “drop in style” will be hosted on Monday, August 15, 2022 at the Austenville Owls Club (34 Oakdale Crescent, Dartmouth) from 1pm – 4pm. All are welcome to join in and listen to Elton John and Billy Joel, share stories and raise a glass to celebrate Pam’s life. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Pam’s memory to the Multiple Sclerosis Society, Regional Residential Services Society and/or the Atlantic Provinces Special Education Authority. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mundle’s Funeral Home, 204 Water St., Pugwash. To send condolences to the family please visit the funeral home website at www.mmcfunerals.com
