Obituary
A joyful reunion 15 years in the making happened today, April 6, 2022, when our beloved mom, Ruth Hamilton, finally received the gift of everlasting peace and joy at the age of 82.
Dema, the name the grandchildren found for her, was born in St. John’s but growing up the daughter of a Buchan’s miner they moved around a bit, but she spent much of her childhood in Windsor.
As a young woman out of school, Ruth did teacher training and was assigned her first post to a one-room school at the Pentecostal school in Black Island, Notre Dame Bay when she met the love of her life, Andy Hamilton, who was a Catholic, they married, she converted and taught school there. Due to centralization, they were resettled to Fortune Harbour, and eventually moved to Corner Brook to build a life together. Ruth started working at the Western Memorial Hospital, her last role before retiring was in the Operating Room as administrative support. They raised their children with music, laughter, and togetherness that is not broken during this challenging time.
Ruth was a lover, a real social person, loved to tell stories and joke, but could bust out in tears on a dime. She felt everything so deeply and loved so hard. She was the president of CWL for a number of years, she wrote a column in the Humber Log, and even though we kids drew on her photo, we really were proud of the smart, artful soul that she was.
Up until yesterday, she could be found rewinding her favorite music videos, her most prized videos were those of the kids and grandkids. Music and poetry kept her close to her God, and her way of touching hearts will not be forgotten.
Ruth is predeceased by her husband, Andy of 49 years; their son Kevin Thomas, who passed at a month of age as well as 5 other babies; her parents, Violet and Tommy Churchill, her sister, Jesse Dorothea Hoddinott, and a large group of in-laws and outlaws, as she would say. She often lamented how as you age, most of the people you know and love leave you, but there was always a sunset to enjoy, a game of cards to play, or a new baby to hold. She had the chance last month to hold her newest great- grandchild, Rori Andi Joan Hamilton.
She leaves to mourn 8 children Cyril (Maureen) Hamilton, Tony (Melanie) Hamilton, Madonna, Paula (Bill) Brake, Paul (Sandra) Hamilton, Laura Ann Hamilton, Kevin Hamilton and Andrea (Jason) Hamilton; 19, Grandchildren and 22 Great-Grandchildren.
Please join us in celebrating her life and saying goodbye. Visitation will take place Friday, April 8, 2022 at 2 PM-4 PM and 7 PM-9 PM, at Country Haven Funeral Home and Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday morning April 9, 2022, 10 AM at the Cathedral of the Most Holy Redeemer and Immaculate Conception, Corner Brook. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to the Holy Redeemer Parish, or to the Western Memorial Hospital Foundation. The family asks that to honor Ruth, have a listen to the song Bring My Flowers Now by Tanya Tucker and know that “if you got love, then you’re sitting on a goldmine. It’s never too late to put love first and that no matter the circumstances, love one another as I have loved you. John 13:34-35.
