Norris’ Obituary
After a lifetime of memories and adventures, great friends, and loving family, Norris Boyd Butt of Robinsons passed peacefully on January 18th, 2022 at Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital, aged 96 years.
Left to celebrate his wonderful life are: his loving wife and best friend of 76 years, Jane (Shears); children: Gailya (Leo Harvey), Sandra (Russell Legge), Arthur (Jodie Burke), Dan (Lori), and Chris (Diane). Norris was the proud grandfather of 8 and great-grandfather of 14, all of whom he loved dearly. His kindness, generosity and love of life will be greatly missed by: his sister Sarah (Ford); extended family, and a wide circle of friends near and far, as well as the staff at the Crosswinds Seniors Resort.
Norris now joins his parents, Dean and Mary; and all of his cherished brothers and sisters who went before him: Joyce (White), Isabella (Gale), Maude (Short), Annie (Major), Cecil, Lydia (Cutler), Ishmil, Grace (Legge), Russell, Lawrence, Lindberg, Raymond, Pearl (Gilliam), and Thomas.
As a young man, Norris served in the Royal Newfoundland Regiment. He was an avid storyteller and often recalled fond memories from the years when he and other former servicemen established the town of Cormack – an experience that undoubtedly contributed to his pioneering spirit and love of woodworking and carpentry.
Norris would proudly share life lessons with all those who were blessed to know him. Later in life he continued to share this knowledge, pursuing a career as an educator, teaching at the former vocational college in Stephenville until he retired in 1983.
No family gathering or get-together at the cabin was complete without Norris playing his guitar – entertaining everyone with his favourite songs and occasional yodeling. He was the pillar of his family, and will be greatly missed and forever remembered.
A memorial service to commemorate Norris’ life will be held at a later date.
“Way up in the sky when the stars start to play, the echoing hills keep yodeling away
The old yellow moon seems to smile on high while the echoing hills yodel back, lullaby.”
– Wilf Carter
