Babcooke, Norman Fredrick, age
81, Antigonish
It is with much love and broken hearts that the family of
Staff Sgt Norman Fredrick Babcooke Reg.# 21673 retired, announce his
passing on August 20, 2022 at St Martha’s Regional Hospital
in Antigonish.
Norman, having just celebrated his 81st birthday, passed away
peacefully with family by his side. He was born on August 19, 1941 in
Belleville, Ontatrio the son of the late Frederick and Madeline
Babcooke.
As a young boy Norman attended elementary and high school in
Deseronto, Ontario and from there went to train at Depot Division in
Regina to become a member of the RCMP. He spent his career posted in
Truro, Sydney and Charlottetown Subdivisions. He spent his final 13
years stationed in Antigonish and retired as Staff Sergeant in charge
with 35 years of service. While stationed in Sydney he became a member
of the Nova Scotia RCMP underwater recovery team called the Scarlet
Divers.
Norman’s biggest love was his family. He spent a
great deal of time with his wife and girls building a cottage in River
Denys where he passed on his love of the outdoors. In his later years
fishing became his passion and he could often be seen towing his boat
towards the water or hauling a chair to the beach to catch the not so
elusive “keeper”.
“Going for coffee” was Norman’s way of
saying I am heading out for conversation whether it be in Maryvale to
visit with his daughter and grand pets, visiting with the RCMP
veterans or just a local restaurant to catch up on the news. One of
his biggest joys was the time he spent with his only grandson to whom
he passed on his quick wit and sense of
humor.
Norman is survived by his loving wife of 57 years Susan,
Cloverville; daughters Karen Gerrior (Kevin) Maryvale, Kathy
Babcooke (Tim) Wolfville, one grandchild Brandon Gerrior (Maggie)
Antigonish and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sisters
Mary (Merton), Joan (Bayne), Jean (Robin) and brother
Melville (Margret).
The family would like to thank all the healthcare professions
involved with Norm’s care including VON, Home Care, St.
Martha’s Regional Hospital’s doctors and emergency
department, but especially the nurse’s in the palliative
care unit and the music therapy program for making him feel safe,
loved and cared for during his stay.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 23 from 2-4 pm and
7-9 pm in C.L. Curry Funeral Home, Antigonish. Funeral
service will be held on Wednesday August 24th at St. James United
Church, Antigonish at 2 pm. Burial in church
cemetery.
Family flowers only please. Donations in memory of Norman may
be made to Heart and Stroke, Diabetic Association or charity of your
choice.
