It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Nicola Polsoni, on August 21, 2022 in his 97th year. Nicola was born on April 24, 1925 to Vincenzo Polsoni and Maria Domenica Fantini in Fossacesia, Italy, the third child of five, Giovanni (predeceased), Concetta (predeceased), Maria and Rita. He is survived by his devoted wife of 64 years, Valentina (nee Festoso), his daughter Luciana, his son Vincenzo, his granddaughter Victoria, his grandson Domenico and many nieces and nephews. Nicola grew up in WWII, experiencing many of the traumas of war from being displaced as military forces captured his town and forced him and his family to flee their home and run for their lives into the woods. Resilient and resolved, Nicola was committed to caring and providing for his family. Nicola emigrated from Italy to Canada and crossed the Atlantic Ocean on the Greek passenger ship Olympia with his wife and children. He worked for over 30 years at Crane Canada Limited as a quality control inspector of their bathtub line. Nicola enjoyed traveling with his wife every year to Italy and Mexico. In his nineties, Nicola travelled to St. Louis USA to meet his newly discovered Uncle, John Fantini, his mother’s baby brother. And during that trip, Nicola visited the grave of his grandfather Camillo Fantini. Before he came to Canada, Nicola operated a farm in Italy. In Canada, as a master gardener, he dazzled his neighbours every year with a magnificent display of colourful swaths of flowers in his front yard and a robust crop of vegetables and fruits in the backyard, all from plants he started from scratch. His tree grafting talent resulted in trees that bore multiple varieties of fruit on a single tree. Over the years, Nicola honed his wine making skills. In a blind taste test of different wines, his wines won first and second prize.
Nicola will be remembered as a wise and quiet man with remarkable gentle strength, a fiercely loyal family man who maintained steadfast discipline in everything he did. He will be dearly missed and his legacy will live on because he created four aspiring master gardeners in his children and grandchildren. Family and Friends are invited to Nicola’s visitation on Wednesday, August 24, 2022, from 6-9 p.m. at the W. G. Young Funeral Home, 430 Huron St, Stratford. Nicola’s Mass of Christian burial will take place on Thursday, August 25, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, 96 Huron St, Stratford. Those wishing to view Nicola’s service at home may do by clicking on view livestream. Entombment will take place following the mass in Avondale Cemetery (Stratford).
