Obituary
On 6 November 2022 Nicola (Nick) Caravaggio passed peacefully after a short illness. Loving father, innovator, actor, healer, sport legend and world traveller, he was surrounded by loved ones in the house he built with his own hands. Nick emigrated to Canada from Fossacesia Italy along with his family in 1953 at the age of 12 to join his father and brother in Peterborough Ontario. Not speaking English, he initially found living in Peterborough difficult. In sport however, his natural athleticism shone through, and he made friends quickly. Nick was recognized as one of the top soccer goalkeepers in eastern Ontario and eventually played semi-professionally for several clubs.
In business, he was a consummate self-made man. Nick began his apprenticeship in Italy as a shoemaker at the age of 8. He opened Nick’s Shoe Repair in 1961 and during his career expanded his interest in the mechanics of the foot and walking by modifying shoes to correct foot problems of his clients. After much study and experimentation, he developed an innovative and highly exacting mechanical gait analysis and orthotic production process that has allowed thousands of people to live full lives because they can walk without pain. His success has resulted in clients seeking his help from around the world. Caravaggio Orthotic Clinic, is now in the very capable hands of his son and business partner Nick Sebastian Caravaggio B.Sc who also holds a C. Ped (C) designation by the College of Pedorthics of Canada, an organization Nick Senior helped create.
His laugh would light up a room, and his love of the arts led him to the Peterborough Theatre Guild in 1969, where he starred regularly in the Guild’s annual musical productions of the 70’s and 80’s including Guys and Dolls, South Pacific and Canterbury Tales which he directed in 1983.
His passing is a loss to the community, however through his work he was able to touch thousands of lives, and thousands more though his philanthropy. Nick was an avid world traveller and the family historian who was very proud of his Italian heritage.
Predeceased by parents Angelo Caravaggio (1968) and Caterina Mattucci (2004), sister Maria Ferreri (2010), and brother Rocco (2020). He is survived by siblings Anna Caravaggio (and Husband Donato DiGiovanni, predeceased) and Al (and wife Jane). He leaves behind his son Rafael and his wife Sabrina, and their daughter Elle Caterina, named for Nick’s mother; His son Nicola (Nick) and his Fiancée Danielle whose loving and skillful care in his final days eased his passing. He also leaves behind his loving and adoring partner Cynthia Odell, and her children Geoff and partner Lesley, and Jill, as well ex-partner Linda, mother of Rafael and Nick, along with many family members and friends. Lovingly remembered by many nieces and nephews in Canada and Italy.
A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, November 13th, 2022 at 2 PM at HIGHLAND PARK FUNERAL CENTRE,2510 Bensfort Road.
In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated by the family.
