Nicholas Hanuschuk
December 13, 2022
It is with deep sadness the family of Nicholas “Nick” Hanuschuk announce he has gone home to be with his Saviour, Jesus.
Nick is predeceased by his brother Walter (Irene) from Australia, and his honorary sister Elisabeth Kolar. Left to deeply mourn are his wife and soul mate of 20 years, Irene.
He will also be lovingly remembered by his children Mark (Karen), Michael (Christeen), Nick Jr. (Lisa), Kenneth (Faye), Kirk (Leanne); his niece Kathe; his siblings Ben (Nadia), Bill (Hazel), Mary (Walter), Olga (Joe) and his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Nick was born on August 2, 1936 in Hodgson, MB to John and Anna Hanuschak (nee. Bartkiw) from Lytviniw and Pidhytsi, Ukraine respectively. He moved to Winnipeg in 1948 with his mother and five siblings. As a junior high student he rode his bike to deliver newspapers to farms along Springfield Road and during summer holidays he shovelled grain in the local elevator, always coming home with a face mask plugged with dust, all the while operating a small 14 acre market garden. In the fall before school he would haul a load of vegetables to Able Wholesale with a Model A Ford truck which he converted from a car.
After the haul he would then go to Transcona Collegiate for classes. In a way he acted as a foster father for his younger siblings. The care he showed extended to the animals on the farm as he carried them as his responsibility.
Once his first two sons were born, Nick went to complete his grade twelve. It was very important to his mother that all of her children have a university degree, so Nick furthered his education with a degree in agriculture from the University of Manitoba, and then a degree in education. While attending university he juggled working as a fireman in the CN Railyards in Transcona as well as a teacher, and then as a Train Engineer until his retirement.
Nick enjoyed taking day trips back to Hodgson in the summer to visit and spend time with old friends. He was a hard worker and was always interested in learning many skills. Nothing was too challenging for Nick. He was a jack of all trades and a skilled carpenter, having built two of his homes. In the 1980’s Nick had the opportunity to build his own cottage at Beresford Lake where he and his family share many memories. He was an honest, hard-working, down to earth man who had the charismatic ability to strike up a conversation with anyone.
He was always interested in listening to people’s stories and learning of different cultures. Nick was genuine, loving, caring, honest and always there for you when you needed him. He was the type of man that people enjoyed having around.
Nick’s shared passion with his wife Irene was gardening and preserving his vegetables in the fall. They loved to travel, camp and fish at Falcon Lake. Sitting around the bonfire was a favourite pastime at home and at the lake where they simply enjoyed being together with their fur babies, Teka, Onya and Mya.
Most important to Nick was his faith in his Lord and Saviour and he loved nothing more than to share his faith with family and friends.
Special thanks to Dr. Claire Jaeger for all her years being Nick’s personal care provider and Dr. Kevin Saunders and all the staff who cared for Nick while he was in Middlechurch Home. Many thanks to all the staff at St. Boniface Hospital Unit B5 for their care.
Cremation has taken place and there will be no service as per Nick’s wishes. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the Mennonite Central Committee.
VichnayaPam’yat Everlasting Memories
Revelations 21: 1-4
He will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself will be with them; [4] he will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning nor crying nor pain any more, for the former things have passed away. “
John 14: 1-3
LET NOT YOUR heart be troubled. You are trusting God, now trust in me. There are many homes up there where my Father lives, and I am going to prepare them for your coming. When everything is ready, then I will come and get you, so that you can always be there where I am. If this weren’t so, I would have told you.
We offer our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Nicholas Hanuschuk VichnayaPam’yat Everlasting Memories and hope that their memory may be a source of comfort during this difficult time. Your thoughts and kind words are greatly appreciated.
