SMITH, Michael William
Passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on Thursday, May 12 after battling cancer for a second time.
Born Jan. 20, 1944 in London, England. Parents William and Mabel; is survived by his older sister Pam. Also survived by his devoted wife and soulmate, Pauline, married 54 years. He loved and was very proud of his four children: Matthew, Jamie (Nell), Alison (Ryan) and Timothy (Lourdes) and granddaughter, Luna.
A graduate of the University of Liverpool, University of Georgia (Fulbright scholar) and University of British Columbia (Killam scholar), with degrees in environmental studies. Professor and chair of Geography, and later Dean of Arts and Social Sciences at Carleton University, Ottawa. Pioneer in permafrost research, spending much time in Canada’s North.
He was grateful for the many friendships made after moving to Picton 17 years ago. He volunteered his time freely with many community groups, most notably as chair of the Prince Edward County Youth Centre (ROC), believing that every child should be given the chance to succeed in life, as he had. He was also involved with County Kids Read and several singing groups, including Joyful Noise, visiting local nursing homes and providing lively musical accompaniment on his banjo.
He loved music, woodworking, fine food and wine, and Tai Chi.
He lived out his spiritual beliefs of kindness, compassion and happiness. His intellect, sense of humour and wit will be missed by many.
Visitation in Glenwood Chapel on Saturday, May 14 from 9:30 to 10:30 am, followed by a short eulogy and a Green Burial.
