Obituary
A Funeral Service for Michael Vickers will take place on Wednesday, August 3rd, 2022 at 10:00 AM from St. Stephen’s Parish, Stephenville, NL. Interment to follow at Hillside Interfaith Cemetery.
Passed away at Glasgow Hall (Parkland) nursing home in Dartmouth, NS on May 29, 2020. Left to mourn his passing and celebrate his life are his two sons (family); Stephen [Carol], grandsons Lennon & Sheamus of Halifax, NS and Michael [Klara] and grandchildren, Ewan and Stella of Ottawa, his best friend and cousin John Basha of Stephenville, NL, and his sister Regina Yorke. Mike is predeceased by his beloved wife, Mary [MacDonald] Vickers and by his parents, William and Mame Vickers and his brother Bill Vickers. Mike left a wide circle of relatives and friends who will deeply mourn his passing.
Born on Bell Island, Newfoundland in 1943, he excelled as a scholar and graduated high school at the tender age of fifteen. He started his teaching career at 16 years of age and attended Memorial University for his Bachelor and Masters degrees. He held diplomas in Speech Pathology and Psychotherapy from Boston University and studied at numerous Universities on a wide range of disciplines. Mike taught in Labrador City, NL and Kingston, ON before moving to Stephenville, NL to become principal at St. Stephen’s elementary and high school. He was an excellent english teacher, and though demanding only the highest standards from his students, he offered support and help to many.
Shortly after arriving in Stephenville, Mike met Mary and a whirlwind courtship ensued. Shortly after they married, two children followed, and family life began. Both Mike and Mary had a wide circle of friends and were very involved in the community. Mike was exceptionally organized and effective in the political sphere, contributing significantly to many campaigns municipally, provincially, and federally.
Mike lovingly cared for Mary throughout her cancer journey. After Mary’s passing, he spent 20 plus years in Mexico, where he was able to enjoy the sun, culture and many friendships along the way.
Mike will be remembered for his unique characteristics, style, and “one of a kind” persona. His attention to detail and daily routines were a blessing and a curse. Structure and goal driven endeavours consumed him, but gave him peace at the same time; while his love and devotion to his two boys centered him.
The family would like to recognize the outstanding care Mike received at Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital, Bay St. George Long Term Care Centre and Glasgow Hall, Shannex during his final 2 years.
At a later date, Mike will be laid to rest alongside his wife Mary at Hillside Interfaith Cemetery in Stephenville, NL.
If so inclined, a donation in his honor can be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada (www.alzheimer.ca).
