BREEN, Michael Edmund –
Age 72, of Mulgrave, passed away peacefully on
Wednesday, June 1, 2022, in St. Martha’s Regional Hospital,
Antigonish, with his loved ones by his side. He was born July 30, 1949
to Boniface and Irene Breen and raised in Cape Jack.
Michael was a devoted loving husband, father, grandfather,
In-law, uncle and friend to so many people. He worked several jobs in
his early years and finally found permanent employment at Mulgrave
Machine Works as a crane operator until he retired at age
65.
He met the love of his life and soulmate Evangeline at an
early age and they were married on June 3, 1972, and were going to
celebrate their 50th Anniversary this year.
They raised 3 amazing sons and had 8 beautiful grandchildren who he
adored and was so proud of.
Michael was a member of St. Lawrence Parish, was on Parish
Council for several years and always ready to lend a helping hand. His
passion was the Mulgrave Volunteer Fire Department where he served for
43 years and was fire chief for 28 years. He loved his firefighter
family and he served his town with pride. He especially loved working
with the Ladies Auxiliary and a few of them stole his heart. He was
also a founding member of the Mulgrave First Responders and took a
major part in many successful fundraisers. A pillar of his community,
Michael also loved to fish, hunt, play cards, spending time with
family and friends, whom he loved dearly. He also had lots of fun
camping and coaching the Mulgrave Mariner Ladies Softball Team in his
earlier years.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Evangeline (DeCoste);
sons, Dwayne, Adam, Jeffery (Jen), all of Fort McMurray, AB;
grandchildren, Aaron, Theodore, Dominic, Ava, Zander, Aliza, Logan and
Hayden; brothers, Joe, Gerard (Sylvia), Cape Jack; sisters, Carol
Latimer (Charlie), Fort McMurray; Marion (Gilbert) DeCoste, Hopewell;
Bernadette Breen, Cape Jack; many nieces and nephews; in-laws, Frank,
Cecelia and Veronica, Firma (Roger) Pedersen, Seward (Marilyn)
DeCoste, Simon DeCoste (Cathy), Bonnie (Sterling) Cutler, Gerard
(Debbie) DeCoste. He will be dearly missed by his little companion,
Max!
He was predeceased by his parents, Boniface and Irene;
father-in-law, Ambrose DeCoste; mother-in-law, Maud DeCoste and
Violet; brothers, George and Arthur; sisters, Jean Walsh, Elizabeth
Breen and Barbara Breen; in-laws, Junior DeCoste, Barbara (Kevin)
MacPherson, Linda (Jim) George; several nieces and
nephew.
A special thank you to Dr. Glenn Gallivan, Shelly Robertson
and all the amazing nurses and doctors in the Palliative Care Unit of
St. Martha’s Hospital.
Visitation will be Sunday, June 5 from 1-4 and 6-9 p.m. in
the Mulgrave and Area Resting Place. Funeral mass will be 11 a.m.
Monday, June 6, from St. Lawrence Roman Catholic Church, Mulgrave with
Father Allan MacPhie officiating. Reception will follow in the
Mulgrave Fire Hall. Donations may be made to the Mulgrave Fire
Department, St. Lawrence Parish Building Fund or a charity of
one’s choice. Arrangements are under the care and direction
of Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury. Words of comfort
