Melvin “Mel” James Thorne – 51, Truro Heights, Nova Scotia slipped away quietly in the early hours of May 25, 2022, in the palliative care unit of the Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Mel grew up in Clare, Nova Scotia and was fiercely proud of both his Acadian and Newfoundland roots. He attended Acadia University in late-80s and early-90s, where he studied Mathematics and Statistics. His career with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans spanned over two decades and involved a variety of financial and administrative positions. Mel is survived by spouse of 29 years, Heather (Hobson), Truro Heights; brothers, Michael (Sheila), Yarmouth and David (Florence), Oromocto, NB; sisters, Christine, Lake Doucette, Lisa, Springdale and Tina, Greenville Rd.; several nieces and nephews; mother-in-law, Donna Hobson, Truro; and fur-babies, Hannah, Eddy, Penny, Ted and Barney. He was pre-deceased by his parents, Mel and Marie Thorne; brothers-in-law, René Deveau and Randy Frotten; father-in-law, Ernie Hobson; fellow partner-in-crime, Charlie Hobson; and fur-babies, Squeaker and Jakey. Donations in Mel’s memory may be made to the Colchester SPCA, or a charity of your choice. A funeral service will take place at 2 p.m., Tuesday, May 31, from Huskilson’s Funeral Home, Yarmouth, interment will follow at St. Vincent de Paul Cemetery, Salmon River.
