Peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on Wednesday, July 27, 2022. Beloved husband and best friend of Rosemary Schirmer for thirty-five years. Devoted father and father-in-law of Maura Hoppenheim, Adam and Sharyn Hoppenheim, Teri Hoppenheim, Jenny Hoppenheim and Matthew Pekofsky, Caroline Hoppenheim and Jake Leibner, Mel Jr., the late Sarina, and the late Dayna Hoppenheim. Proud grandfather of Tyler and Billy, Sydney, and Jamie; Jonah, Jordan, and Jake; Jack, Sophia, and Lily; David, Ilan, and Noah; and Lev. Great-grandfather of Bobbi and Teddi. Dearest brother and brother-in-law of Lila and the late Moe Ackman, the late Berel Hoppenheim; and brother-in-law of Ingrid and David Bryson, Geoffrey Chambers, Melanie Schirmer, Anne-Marie Schirmer, and the late Sabina Schirmer. Son of the late Jennie Felgar and the late David Hoppenheim. Caring son-in-law of Margaret and the late Dr. Kurt Schirmer. Nephew of the late Issie and the late Molly Felgar. Cousin of Dr. Arthur and Yvonne Felgar, Faigie and Harold Borden, Chuck Felgar, Berel and Leslie Hoppenheim, Helen and Jack Caplan, the late Babsie White. Cherished godson of Hymie and Freda Sckolnick. Mel will be fondly remembered by his nieces, nephews, family, friends and all those whose lives he touched so deeply.
From humble beginnings on Saint-Urbain Street, Mel achieved great success in the meat industry and later founded Panavision Canada, which led to the creation of MELS Cité du Cinema, the largest sound and stage studios in North America. Mel received many awards for his film achievements, including an Academy Award, a Genie Award, and a Special Grand Prize of the Americas from the Montreal World Film Festival.
Although Mel left school at the age of seventeen to support his family, he always prioritized education. He founded the “Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema” at Concordia University, where he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate. Mel contributed immensely to the economic development of Canada and was known as ‘Mr. Hollywood North’. He was dedicated to his city – Montreal – and to the Jewish community. Mel was the chairman of the Combined Jewish Appeal, Board Member of the Montreal Children’s Hospital and Board Member of the Montreal Heart Institute. He served as a Director of Société du Havre de Montréal and a Director of Loto-Québec for many years. Hundreds of organizations benefited from his generosity. One of his proudest moments was his installation as a Member of the Order of Canada in 2015.
Heartfelt thanks to Drs. Jean-Claude Tardif, Shaun Selcer, Philippe L. L’Allier and Nadia Bouabdallaoui, as well as the exceptional nurses and staff of the Montreal Heart Institute for their care and compassion. Mel’s family and friends will never forget the immense love and devotion shown by his dear wife Rosemary. Her strength and dedication to him was an inspiration to all.
Funeral service from Paperman & Sons, 3888 Jean Talon St. W., on Friday, July 29 at 12:00 noon. Burial at the Hadrath Kodesh Congregation Cemetery, de la Savane. Shiva at his home. Père et beau-père dévoué de Maura Hoppenheim, d’Adam et Sharyn Hoppenheim, de Teri Hoppenheim, de Jenny Hoppenheim et de Matthew Pekofsky, de Caroline Hoppenheim et de Jake Leibner, de Mel Jr, Sarina zl et de Dayna zl. Fier grand-père de Tyler et Billy, Sydney et Jamie; Jonah, Jordan et Jake; Jack, Sophia et Lily; David, Ilan et Noah; et Lev. Arrière-grand-père de Bobbi et de Teddi. Filleul chéri de Hymie et Freda Sckolnick. Les nièces, les neveux, la famille et tous ceux dont la vie a été si profondément touchée se souviendront affectueusement de Mel.
Après des débuts modestes sur la rue Saint-Urbain, Mel a connu un grand succès dans l’industrie de production de viande et a fondé par la suite Panavision Canada, ce qui a conduit à la création de MELS Cité du Cinéma, les plus grands studios de cinéma en Amérique du Nord. Mel a reçu de nombreux prix pour ses réalisations cinématographiques, notamment un Academy Award, un Genie Award et le Grand Prix spécial des Amériques dans le cadre du Festival des films du monde de Montréal.
Même s’il a quitté l’école à l’âge de 17 ans pour subvenir aux besoins de sa famille, l’éducation a toujours été au rang de des priorités. Il a fondé l‘École de cinéma Mel-Hoppenheim à l’Université Concordia où il a reçu un doctorat honorifique.
Mel a énormément contribué au développement économique du Canada et était connu comme « M. Hollywood North ». Il était dévoué à sa ville, Montréal et à la communauté juive. Mel a été président de l’Appel juif unifié, membre du conseil d’administration de l’Hôpital de Montréal pour enfants et membre du conseil d’administration de l’Institut de cardiologie de Montréal. Il a été administrateur de la Société du Havre de Montréal et directeur de Loto Québec pendant de nombreuses années. Des centaines d’organisations ont bénéficié de sa générosité. L’un des moments dont il est le plus fier est sa nomination à l’Ordre du Canada en 2015.

La famille et les amis de Mel n’oublieront jamais l’immense amour et le dévouement dont a fait preuve sa chère épouse Rosemary. Sa force et son dévouement à son égard ont été une inspiration pour tous.
Le service funéraire a eu lieu le vendredi 29 juillet à 12h00 chez : Paperman & fils, 3888 rue Jean Talon Ouest. L’inhumation a eu lieu au cimetière de la congrégation Hadrath Kodesh, situé au 5015, rue de la Savane. La shiva aura lieu à son domicile.
