Melbourne “Mel”
Duncan Gilroy, 84, of Amherst, NS passed away
peacefully with his loving family by his side on Saturday, July 2,
2022 at All Saints Hospital, Springhill. Mel was
born in Leicester, NS to the late William and Pauline (Stiles)
Gilroy.
Mel was born and raised in Nova Scotia,
leaving at the age of seventeen to move to the United States where he
joined the US Navy. He trained as a welder and toured on the
USS Lake Champlain Aircraft Carrier, which he was very proud
of. After his departure from the Navy, Mel worked various
jobs but settled in happily with The Entwistle Company as a
welder. Following this, Mel returned home to Nova Scotia for
his retirement.
He enjoyed playing the lottery with
aspirations of the big win. Mel was a big fan of the game shows Wheel
Of Fortune and Jeopardy and never wanted to miss an episode.
In his spare time, Mel looked forward to his daily meetings at the
local coffee shop with “The Boys” to catch up on what was
going on around town.
He was a devoted family man and loved
spending time at his cottage. It was both special and
important to him as it gave an opportunity for family and friends to
create wonderful memories together. He loved sitting in his
chair in the front porch listening to music, taking in the sunsets,
and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere.
Mel will be dearly missed by his wife,
Leona “Lonie”, Amherst; four children, Mark (Amy),
California, Paula (Paul) Lussier, Wendy (Stephen) Nault, and Connie
Gilroy, all of Massachusetts; seven grandchildren, Joey, Evan, Eve,
Victoria, Sabrina, Matthew, and Julianne; step-children, Kari (Shonna)
McCormick, Tami Reid, Ron McCormick, Candace (Mark) MacPherson,
Shaunna-Rae (Rob) Ryan; several step-grandchildren; his brother, Ron
(Marg) Gilroy, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and good
friends.
Besides his parents, Mel was predeceased
by his previous wife, Antoinette “Toni” and his sister,
Connie Lupton.
The family wishes to extend their
deepest gratitude to all the staff at All Saints Hospital, Springhill
