Obituary
We are saddened to announce the passing of May Sather, age 97, on Friday, February 25, 2022 at the Kyle & District Health Center, Kyle, SK where she had been a resident for the past several years.
May Violet Sather was born near Saskatoon, SK on May 8, 1924 to Jacob & Elizabeth Pfeifer. May grew up one of seven siblings on the family farm, which changed locations several times over the years. May had an adventurous spirit and was determined to join the Army after turning 18, and did exactly that in 1942, serving for almost two years.
After leaving the Army, she married Leslie Waldner. She became a young, widowed mother with one child, Betty (Elizabeth) in 1948. May often worked as a live-in housekeeper so she could have Betty with her. One such job brought her to the Kyle, SK area where she soon met Harry Sather. Romance blossomed, and May & Harry were married in Saskatoon, SK on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 1952. Along with Betty, the three of them became an instant family. There were soon two boys added to the mix, Harvey and Philip.
May loved farm life. She was always at Harry’s side helping with every aspect of farming, plus growing a huge garden and raising chickens. May was a hard worker by nature but she had a fun spirit as well. She was always singing and dancing, even if no music was playing, or even if her partner was a broom. May never took too much time to think about problems and plan the solution. Her way of dealing with them was to just get to work at it and the answer would come or get solved along the way.
May loved to cook and bake and she felt she wanted to publish a cookbook. Her first one was a rhubarb one, which was quite successful and sold out the first printing quite quickly. She went on to publish three additional cookbooks and two books with a compilation of the songs she loved to sing. At 80 years old, May was incredibly pleased to be crowned the Rhubarb Queen at a Rhubarb festival in Lethbridge, AB.
May was a devoted wife and mother who loved her children and grandchildren unconditionally and was always ready to give a helping hand when needed. May will be fondly remembered by her children and their families, her daughter, Betty Hardy, and her children, Roberta Hardy (Kevin Porter), Rhonda (Darren) Joel, and Raymond (Brenda) Hardy; her son, Philip (Lorna) Sather, and their daughter, Angela (Cy) Lenz; her seven great-grandchildren; her great-great-grandchild; her sister, Helen Sather; her sister-in-law, Evelyn Pfeifer; and by numerous nieces and nephews.
May was predeceased by her husband, Harry Sather; her son, Harvey Sather; her parents, Jacob & Elizabeth Pfeifer; her siblings and their spouses, Hector (Erma) Pfeifer, Mary (Dan) Fingler, June (Jack) Stark, John (Lil) Pfeifer, and Herb Pfeifer; and by her brother-in-law, Lloyd Sather.
A life well lived, rest in peace, mom. Your work here is done.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
