Passed peacefully away in the presence of his family on 15 September 2022: Matthew John Prim, dearly beloved husband of Maria (Adey), loving father of Matthew (Kendra), Christopher (Maryanne) and John (Sarah); dearly loved grandfather of Emily, Noah, Lucas, Jude, John Gabriel, and Christopher Matthew, and treasured son of the late Matthew John Prim and Theresa (Whalen) Prim. Predeceased by sister Regina (James) Lysaght and brother Charles Prim(m).
Leaving to mourn his brother Joseph Prim (Geraldine, deceased) and sister Alice Furlong (Michael), sister-in-law Helen Knox (Kevin), brother-in-law John Adey (Mary), many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews in the Prim and Adey families.
Matt was a kind, generous, devout and talented man who was devoted to his family. A graduate of Holy Cross School on Patrick Street, as a teenager he sailed on the S. S. Kyle and other vessels, traveling as far as South America.
As a young man he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and was posted for two years as a cryptographic analyst during the Cold War to Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe at Fontainebleau, France. Subsequently returning to Canada, he continued this work at the NORAD Station at Beaverbank, Nova Scotia. Later he worked for Environment Canada in the Meteorological Service at the Halifax Airport, and retired from that position.
Matt was an accomplished self-taught artist who painted most days of his life, producing oils, watercolours and beautiful pen-and-ink sketches. He became an expert in carpentry and masonry, building three of his own homes. His kindness, delightful sense of humour, and storytelling brought joy to all our lives. We will miss him dearly.
The Prim Family would like to thank the staff at the Palliative Care Unit at the Miller Centre in St. John’s, NL.
Resting at Caul’s Funeral Home, LeMarchant Road on Tuesday, September 20 and Wednesday, September 21 from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. – 9 p.m.
Funeral Mass to take place from St. Patrick’s Church, Patrick Street, on Thursday, September 22, 2022 at 10 a.m.
Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord,
and let Your perpetual light shine upon him.
May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed
rest in peace.
Amen.
