Obituary
Matt was born in Sokalu, Poland and immigrated to Canada with his parents and two sisters in 1929, settling in North Battleford, SK. He is survived by his sisters Anne Konop of Leawood, KS and Dorothy Vermette of St. Louis, MO.
Matt was predeceased by wives Mary and Beth, his father Boris in 1942, his mother Polly in 1996, brother Steve, sisters Jean Niscisco and Olga Yonz and his good friend of 66 years George Esterer in 2017. He will greatly missed by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and dear friends.
Matt started farming when he was 19 at Denholm, SK and went to work during the winter months for International Nickle as an underground driller. He then did auto body work but injured his back having to have surgery. He then took a hairdresser course and opened two beauty salons in Edmonton. Both he and his wife Mary worked very long hours until they sold their shops and moved to Kamloops to operate a salon there. After his first wife’s passing Matt took up contracting building homes in Kamloops and Blind Bay.
He got married for the second time to Beth and they eventually retired to the Shuswap, building their home in Blind Bay and then later moving to Salmon Arm. Matt had a lifelong love of fishing, starting at the age of 13 riding his bike 15 miles to make his catch. Many enjoyable hours were also spent fishing with his nephew Todd Misemer of Kansas City, MO. Matt loved going on cruises and taking bus tours with Wells Gray Tours. He travelled to Arizona and California for the winters. He journeyed to the Ukraine twice and then sponsored his cousins to come to Canada for an extended visit. He enjoyed musical concerts and taking in shows at the Vernon Performing Arts Centre.
On most Sundays he was found worshiping at the United Church in Salmon Arm. Matt would often attend Hillside Village where he faithfully volunteered for many years. When anyone needed help Matt was right there to give a helping hand whenever he could. Matt was a true Gentleman who will be missed by everyone who knew and loved him.
