Obituary of Matilda Morgan
June 7, 1925 – Garland, Manitoba
December 22, 2022 – Calgary, Alberta
Our beloved mother, Matilda “Tillie” Morgan of Calgary, AB, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 22, 2022, at the age of 97 years with one of her children by her side at Chinook Intercare.
Tillie was born in Garland, MB on June 7, 1925. She was the ninth child of fifteen children born to a homesteading family. She left home when she was sixteen and moved to Winnipeg, MB to find work as a waitress. She went to Vancouver, BC in 1951 to visit her sister and decided to stay. Later, she met Douglas Stanley Morgan on a blind date. They eloped six weeks later, on August 2, 1952. From there, they moved to Calgary, AB looking for work and landed in Edmonton, AB. Tillie worked at a sportswear factory until the birth of their first two daughters. She became a full-time mother and homemaker. They relocated to Calgary, AB in 1956.
In 1958, Doug and Tillie purchased their first home in Glamorgan in Calgary. Tillie was involved with many activities and community events. Doug and Tillie bowled regularly, belonged to the Glamorgan Community Association, and volunteered and participated in many events. She sold Beauty Counselor makeup to friends and family. Tillie also became involved with the Learning Disabilities Organization in Calgary.
In 1975, the family moved to Varsity Estates in NW Calgary and Tillie continued her involvement in various groups as well as canvassing for charitable organizations. She became an avid gardener and enjoyed knitting, needlework, and even macrame at one time. Doug and Tillie were members of the Grandparents Program at Ranchlands Community School where their first grandchild was a student. She joined the Liberal Party of Canada and was an active member of the Liberal Ladies.
When Doug retired in 1986, Doug and Tillie were able to travel extensively. They visited various locations in Great Britain, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and the South Pacific including Australia and New Zealand. They enjoyed numerous family holidays to Montana, Disneyland, Nevada, and Disney World. They began spending winters in California to escape the cold in Calgary. Eventually, they purchased a condo in Tsawwassen, BC where they spent their winters.
Tillie cherished being a grandmother and was always available to help when the grandchildren needed a babysitter. She was very involved in their lives, and they adored her.
She will be most remembered for her hospitality and love of cooking. Especially her homemade pickles, pierogis, and cabbage rolls.
Tillie is survived by her six children and nine grandchildren and their families. Millie (Don) Hartviksen along with Kelsey (Amir) Sharifzadeh-Najafi of Cochrane, AB, Mallory (Chris Wollin) Hartviksen, and Erik Hartviksen, all of Calgary, AB.
