Obituary
Mary Magdeline (MacLellan) Copan
New Waterford
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of the beloved matriarch of our family, Mary Copan, on Monday January 10, 2022, at Maple Hill Manor. Born in Inverness on March 14, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Catherine Ann and John Angus MacLellan.
Mary passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving children Richard (Margaret) Copan, Carmel (Ambrose) Coady, and Rodney (Wendy)Copan.
Mary was a tough cookie with a heart of gold. She was a clever storyteller and could always make those around her laugh. She was a social butterfly who loved to be surrounded by family and friends. She carried a deep connection to her birthplace of Inverness, where she grew up and was a hospital aide during WW11 – marrying the love of her life shortly after and creating a beautiful home and family that she loved fiercely. All who knew her, felt her love, compassion, and support – especially her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She loved step-dancing and music – especially Scottish and fiddle music, taking her last breath after hearing her favorite song. She was an active member of St. Leonard’s parish for many years and an avid reader.
In addition to the children who were at her side, she is survived by a son Roger Copan; grandchildren Tammy (Gordon) Henderson, Amy, Krystle, and Matthew (Kerriann) Coady; Chera (Conan) Clements, Kevin (Penny), Richard Jr, Jennifer, Roger, Gary Copan; 14 great-grandchildren and daughters- in-law Karen Power and Diane Copan.
Mary was predeceased by her beloved husband Henry Copan (1989) and her family takes great solace that they have been reunited. She was also predeceased by two daughters who passed away during infancy, and all of her siblings Christina Lloyd, Jessie Morrison, Kay Kennedy, Hughie, Joe, and Alex Maclellan.
A special thanks to Helen Murray who has provided her with excellent care and companionship over the last several years.
In memory of Mary, the family asks that any charitable donations be made to Maple Hill Manor, New Waterford, Nova Scotia.
Cremation has taken place. A private family service is being held with Father James Oliver officiating, followed by interment in Mount Carmel Cemetery.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of McLellan Brothers Funeral Home, 3183 Plummer Ave, New Waterford, 902-862-7500.
