Mary Edmonstone aka MOM, Gramma, Great-Gramma passed away peacefully at the age of 88 years. Mary was born, and grew up in Trail, BC to Maria and James Sturgeon and grew up with three brothers, Jim, Albert, and Leonard. Mary often spoke of riding the train to Nelson City Park for a day of swimming and playing. Mary was proud of having the first new bicycle in Trail with chrome plated handlebars since the war. Mary then worked briefly as a cashier before marrying Robert “Bob” Edmonstone and embarking on a lifelong career as a loving mother of six children, and their families including 14 grandchildren, and 25 great-grandchildren. Mary and Bob moved from Tail for a brief time to live in Regina and Saskatoon, SK. before moving back to the Trail area to live in Rossland, Montrose, and Castlegar, BC.
As Mary was raising her family, she was able to become an accomplished seamstress and toy maker, crafting clothing for dolls, making dolls, knitting countless sweaters, mittens, slippers, toques, and crocheted dollies, blankets, etc. There was always a colouring book and crayons available for visitors of all ages in Gramma’s house. Mary also had a song for any occasions and would cheerfully sing it for any and all, especially children.
Mary was very eager to share her skills with others and in doing so she made many lifelong friends. She would always enjoy when friends and family dropped in for a visit, and always produced a bevy of snacks in the form of baked good and sweets.
Mary was predeceased by her husband of 48 years, Bob, her Mother Maria, father James and her three brothers. She is survived by her children, Gerry (Monica), Ronald (Lori), Allan (Gay), Lorraine (Murray), Diane (Tony), and Heather (Dale) and their families.
