MacDonald – Mary
Frances MacDonald, 96, of Summerside, PEI, passed away peacefully on
Sunday, December 18, 2022 at her home surrounded by her
family.
She is survived by her three daughters, Shirley Anne
MacArthur (Gary Picard), Susan Wedlake (Peter) and Gina MacMillan
(Brooke); nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and one
great-great-grandchild; two sisters, Therese Peters and Jean
MacDonald; and many nieces and nephews who will all miss her
terribly.
Mom always claimed that she was unremarkable, but her family
and friends know that she was quite the opposite. Living on her own
and driving her car until late spring, she seemed to her daughters to
be unstoppable. She was strong and very stubborn; sophisticated and
fun-loving; and beautiful and smart to the very end. She loved
flowers, a good cup of strong tea (King Cole), Christmas and giving
the best hugs, Kleenex, curling, and her weekly hair-days (thanks
Mike).
Generous with her heart and time, Mom was always ready to
help her family and friends whenever there was a need.
Mom was an expert biscuit maker; she would inevitably arrive
at every family function with a huge basket of biscuits which would be
devoured by family often two and three at a time like apples. Her
grandchildren called them “little blobs of
love”.
She was also an expert worrier – a trait she
appears to have inherited from her father. She insisted that all
visitors “get on the road before dark” and that we call her
as soon as we arrived home “safe and sound”.
Mom treasured life and held on to it with dogged
determination despite the hardships of the last six months –
she suffered three strokes, a heart attack and a broken hip but true
to her strength and spirit she fought hard to recover enough to be
discharged from the hospital and return to her family home, the place
she most cherished.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband, our father, Reg,
whom she kept in her heart throughout and who now, once again, will be
by her side.
As her daughters, we knew we could count on her, that she
would always be there for us and that she would always be on our side.
She was our port in the storm – our safe harbour. We will
remember so many lovely things about Mom but most of all we will
remember how very much she loved us. And even though our hearts are
broken, we can smile because we were lucky ones to have had her in our
lives.
We would like to thank all those people who helped Mom
through the last months of her life, in particular the staff at the
Queen Elizabeth and Prince County Hospitals, the amazing Home Care
nurses and especially her dedicated care givers, Linda, Joyce, Rowena
and Cassie.
A celebration of Mary’s/Mom’s life will
be held at Hillhurst Inn, 181 Fitzroy St. Charlottetown on January 3,
2023 from 5PM to 8PM. In lieu of sending flowers, Mom would love for
you to plant some flowers this spring.
Resting at Moase Funeral Home, Summerside. Interment later in
St. Paul’s Cemetery, Summerside. No visiting hours by
request. Memorial donations to a charity of your choice would be
appreciated.
