With heavy hearts we announce the peaceful passing of Betty
(Day) MacDonald, age 87, on February 9, 2022, at Green Meadows
Community Residence for Seniors, North Grant, Antigonish
County.
Formerly from South River Road, Antigonish, Betty John D. was
born September 14, 1934 in Campbellton, NB to the late Bob and Corinne
(Roy) Day.
The family moved to New Glasgow, Nova Scotia when Mom was a
young girl. Her older brother was attending StFXU when she
decided to follow him to Antigonish after grade 11 to attend Nursing
school and be with Bobby. Mom was a proud graduate of St.
Martha’s School of Nursing in 1955 where she met many
lifelong friends. Mom worked in Montreal for a short time
before returning to Antigonish to work and marry John D. She
became a stay-at-home Mom extraordinaire raising 4 busy
kids. She was the mom with a carload of kids travelling to
their activities. Later years, Mom was employed with StFX
where she retired from the bookstore. Mom enjoyed a good
joke, a hearty laugh, crosswords, music, all sports, dogs, and
baking. Many red ribbons were won at the exhibition for her
famous baked goods. Her whistle was known in the rink,
soccer field, ball field, basketball court, the neighbourhood for
supper call, and even the nursing home when she needed
something.
Friends always left with a full belly and homemade
treats.
Surviving are her 4 children Ronnie, Michelle (Rocky Hudson),
and Bobby, all of Antigonish; and Lenore (Mike MacNutt), Halifax;
grandchildren, Siobhan, Kali, Grayson, Grace, and Ava; sister- in-
law, Anne Black, South Bend, Indiana; and life-long friend for over 67
years, Hope MacDonald.
She was predeceased by her husband, John D; her parents; and
her only sibling, Fr. Bobby Day.
The family would like to thank the staff at Green Meadows for
their care and compassion. Mom had an instant connection
with Jamie Mattie and he could always make her smile. Thank
you, Dr. Mary Gorman, for being her care provider and a friend for
many years.
Visitation will be held Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9pm in
C.L. Curry Funeral Home, 135 College Street, Antigonish.
Funeral Mass will be held Tuesday in St. Ninian Cathedral, Antigonish,
at 11:00am. Social distancing protocols are in place and
masks are mandatory for both visitation and funeral, and valid proof
of full vaccination is required.
Burial in St. Ninian Cemetery in the spring.
In Memoriam, donations to your local SPCA
appreciated.
